The name doesn't bother me. Lots of music products are named after things that have some negative connotations. My Poly-Ana is named after an annoyingly optimistic person. But that's kind of the point, she's eager to please. Also it's misspelled to make a nice pun with POLYphonic-ANAlog synth. That's the one suggestion I would make regarding name. If you can, try to make a word that doesn't exist yet. (How was I to know that "polyana" is phonetic Russian for "glade"?)

I think the name Charlatan is good, you should keep it.karrikuh wrote: Well, when I chose the name I considered a "charlatan" as just a person who pretends to be someone (s)he isn't (hint to virtual analog). Also, I just thought it sounded good. I admit that the true meaning is rather bad from a marketing point of viewand I'm seriously considering a name change for the final 1.0 release. I'm open to suggestions, but please keep the name short, simple and memorizable!
It would be good to be able to chose among several background colors, though.
The GUI design is very good, plain and simple, the way I like it.

I like that color.Teksonik wrote:Something like this would be easy on the eyes for long periods...........

I think RunBeerRun has copyrighted such colors exclusively for his plugins, so you might get trouble using itcosmosis wrote:Personally, I would prefer a Windows 3.1 look:

Hi,
i just found a little time to check Charlatan v0.9.2.
The sound os OK but there are some things lacking:
- a preset browser, at least inside the DAW. When i load a fxp file the settings are loaded but the name is displayed nowhere.
- A Sawtooth in OSC1. With out this you could not even do a simple Synth Brass
- An Unison with adjustable voices would be nice. This could replace the missing Sawtooth in OSC1.
- More LFO waveforms like Saw, Ramp, Sine, S&H or Random
EDIT:
The Sawtooth in OSC1 seems to be available with the Shape nob at maximum value.

you can get a saw in OSC1 by tweaking the shape of the triangle waveform.Ingonator wrote:Hi,

I'd second that, particular a s&h or random one.Ingonator wrote:- More LFO waveforms like Saw, Ramp, Sine, S&H or Random
Actually, how would you define the differences between s&h and random?

A Sample and Hold circuit does exactly that. When triggered by the LFO, it samples some voltage and holds that amount steady at the output until triggered again.GaryG wrote:I'd second that, particular a s&h or random one.Ingonator wrote:- More LFO waveforms like Saw, Ramp, Sine, S&H or Random

When you S&H noise, you get the "random" modulator, because at any given time the waveform will be at an unpredictable level.
But on a modular with a S&H module you can apply it to any signal. Envelopes, LFO waveforms, etc. So you could say, chop up a ramp LFO wave into a staircase shape.
But usually S&H and "random" are used interchangeably. Most every classic poly-synth I can think of had the S&H (and like LFO there's typically only one, shared by all voices) hard-wired to the noise source. Usually it's just another LFO waveform option.

Unlikely in the near future as I don't have a Mac. However, in general, I do have interest in porting Charlatan to other platforms.zeep wrote:Has the question for an OSX version already been booed?

Holy sh*t!!! This one sounds great!!!
I made a pad in a minute and i love the sound even WITHOUT effects
Normally i would, being spoiled in the virtual world, reach for some fx to make up for my programming .. but not needed here
Great job!

+1 to keep the name. At first it seemed weird, but now I like it. It's kinda humorous but mostly sounds kool. It's also somewhat established now. Berzerk is more a kiddie name.

Thanks for your hint. With the Shape knob at maximum value the waveform is a Sawtooth indeed.bpblog wrote:you can get a saw in OSC1 by tweaking the shape of the triangle waveform.Ingonator wrote:Hi,

I am currently programming presets on my Moog Slim Phatty and such kind of Triange/Saw morph which is also possible with it could be really nice.
UPDATE:
There is another thread at KVR about doing the Brass sound from "Out Of Touch" from Hall & Oates: http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... 1&start=60
I have tried to reprogram this for Xils Synthix and Arturia Prophet V2 and now i tried to di the same with Charlatan:
https://rapidshare.com/files/843710500/ ... Test_1.mp3
Like with my Prophet V2 patches this incliúdes two Tracks with slightly different patches which are slightly panned (in Ableton Live 8 -15L and 15R) to make the sound wider.
Here are the two Charlatan patches i made for the demo:
https://rapidshare.com/files/283973213/ ... _Brass.zip
Those patches were created using the latest Charlatan v0.9.3 (released today).
Here are the demos with Prophet V2 and Synthix for comparison:

I now had ther time to play around with this synth a while.
Runs without any issues, Win XP, Reaper 4. Haven#t tested on my Win7 System.
I like the sound !
The simplicity of the layout makes it easy to create sounds.

Brilliant, thx for the new version. Stereo out, bank support.
Really like this little thing as does many judging by the page count here. (name and color is fine as it is for me)
Also cheers for the patches Ingo. (btw and ot, just curious: why are u using underscore in file names?)
