October patch contest: suggestions?

A couple of ideas:

I'm still keen on a mini soundbank contest for one, perhaps even all, of the free u-he synths - but, as it's a bit more involved than the usual contests, it might be better to announce such a contest a couple of months in advance .

I also quite like 3ee's suggestion for "Something Autumnal" from last time around.

Any more?

What I mean: One patch contains a sequenced loop with kick, bass, hihat and snare. Just an example, but it can be around those instruments.

woops - quoted my own post when I meant to edit it

might as well ask if anyone has any thoughts or ideas about the next contest?

My suggestion would be a drone contest :)
But maybe that's to similar to the modular madness contest.

As well as making suggestions, it would be helpful if people could also comment upon those suggestions already submitted - have a discussion rather than just adding to a long list.

My view: I think it's time we had a more abstract theme, like 3ee's "Autumn" idea, rather than the more literal "make a patch in this genre" that we seem to do a fair bit of.

Post

Well if an abstract contest is needed then why not use this theme: Abstraction

Drones sounds like a fun contest too.

Regarding making a patch for a specific genre, that's not what I suggested. I suggested one band in one patch. Then it isn't really necesary if you specify a specific genre, fwiw it could be a medieval patch, with lute, hand drum, flute, and some other percussion. The title is rather abstract as it is already.

If you listened to the track I posted in this topic then the bass, kick, hihat and snare is just one patch. That is just an example, but you don't need to focus on just a specific genre.

Hmm... it's certainly abstract, but a little too abstract. I had in mind something that, whilst abstract, might at least suggest one or more sonic interpretations. For me 3ee's idea "Autumnal" does that, whereas "Abstraction" doesn't. Or, put another way, you might argue that just about any patch could be an interpretation of "Abstraction", the same can't be said for "Autumnal".

I know - I never said, nor meant to imply that you did. ;)

That said, it is a very literal, prescriptive task - "make a patch like this".

Btw, don't mistake me expressing an opinion for me saying this is how it's going to be. I'll argue my view, but in the end I'm happy going with the consensus - that's the whole point of this thread. :)

I think a lot of Zebra users would like such patches, me too :)
It`s not a bug... it`s a feature!

I love the idea of more abstract ZPCs. But I would bet that not many people would participate in such a contest. Some months ago we had the idea to build a patch inspired by a picture. I _LOVE_ the idea. But I'm almost sure that such things will scare the less experienced users.

Just my opinion of course :)

That's why I always suggest such simple themes with easy to understand rules.
We had a lot of entrants in the last few contests and it would be nice if it would continue like that.

Yep, there's nothing wrong with simple, straightforward themes (of which we've done a fair few). But it would be interesting, for the sake of variety, to throw in a more leftfield idea now and then.

And I don't think that the rules for an "Autumnal" theme would be any harder to understand than those for the average contest.

hej Dennis, what do you mean by 'drone' -- i'm not sure if you're thinking about honeybees or indian music but i like the sound of this for a contest idea too - probably for ACE or Bazille right?

ps: btw, thanks for sharing those Bazille patches!

In synthland 'drone' has a meaning of its own that's quite separate to those you mentioned and rather difficult to define with any precision.

It's somewhere between a pad and an atmospheric effect - meant to be played as a background noise, sometimes monophonic, sometimes polyphonic and often with an atonal element to it.

"Bazzile bacteria and laboratory noises patch contest" :hihi:
...Bronto might like this one :D
