Hi Peter,
Over the past couple days, I have been getting used to what some of the controls do, going through the manual, etc..but I was wondering is there any way you can make it so when you go into Unison mode, so that it uses all 12 voices? Or if maybe in a future update that it might be possible?
I know it uses the first 1-6 for unison mode, but just wondered if there was a way around that.
Also, is all that tied into the 7-12 voices using the same tunings as 1-6? It would be cool if every voice could have their own seperate tunings if possible. Might eat up more CPU but could be worthwhile
Sounds great the way it is of course,
but just wondered what you thought about all that.

Hi Rob - There were several reasons for implementing it in this way - not because of cpu, it would not take more cpu to spend the tuning controls on a 12-voice base instead on a 6x2 voice channel base since all voices are real separate anyway (so 12 independent monosynths), and adding tuning options for those would have as well as no effect on cpu load:
Unisono mode: First off unisono using 12 voices simply is way too fat and gets muddy. It can get as fat with 6 voices already that you don't really miss anything. Secondly in a unisono patch all voices have to have their "right" place in the whole, regarding pitch, cutoff, portamento etc., otherwise the sound gets muddy. With 12 voices involved one had to completely change the spread algorithm as well as the allocation of all other tuning parameters so that each voice has its place to produce a pleasing tone. This ich much more difficult with 12 voices, since there's not the same amount of "space" left to spread values, and the sound would get intransparent. And since the detuning scheme is based on a 2 voices channel base (see below), always two voices would have the same detunings which would sum up and sound unpleasant. That's why unisono is strictly on a 6-voice base (with the options to mute voices for 1-6 voices being included for variable fatness or real mono etc.) so that you don't need to care about detunings and can use this feature intuitively.
Polyphonic mode: There are too two reasons here to have the tuning features on a 6x2 voice channel base. First on one main goal was that you can increase the polyphony of any former OP-X PRO sound from formerly 6 up to 12 without changing the general sound, which is the case with this system since it's like hooking up two indentical 6-voice synths in overflow-mode, but still with full rotary allocation. This way the general sounds remains exactly the same while having double polyphony. With new tunings for voices 7-12 the general sound would change, since it's determined a big part by the voice's detunings. Secondly it's extremely difficult and time-consuming to tune full 12 voices individually, so that they in the end produce a pleasing whole in the sum. I think nobody would ever do that, and it would be very difficult to program new sounds, plus everytime you would switch a 6-voice sound to 8 or 12 voices you had to care about the tunings of the new involved voices, which would kill intuitivity and ease of use. With the 6x2 voice channel base you are able to do tunings in depth without losing the oversight, and keeping the full option to increase polyphony anytime without having to care again about detunings.
As you can see there are many things to think of in a separate voice design system to keep it intuitively handlable and producing a pleasant and transparent sound, especially if there many voices are involved

Ok cool, thanks for the detailed answer Peter!
I was thinking about it after reading your post, and the only thing with OP-X is that even if it could be done, if it was changed too much, it won't really be as much like the original OB-X anymore. Might as well call it something else and change the skin, etc...and I don't think I'd want that anyway.

I could gush about how much I'm digging Pro-II and it would all be true.
I do have one request, on my system it's really hard to see if the effects are on or off. I wish the button states had more contrast.

Great synth and very useful sounds!
But I seem to have issues in Live 8.2.1 - hanging my sound system (M-Audio Firewire Solo) often when editing midi or changing presets on the fly in OP-X Pro II while playing quite a crowded set. I can usually save, but closing Live then creates a crash. Nothing similar experienced with any other VSTis. The Live example set played fine.
The crashes are most annoying as I have to reboot PC to continue (WinXP SP3 32bit). Have mailed crash reports to Ableton, do not know what else to do. Trying editing an OP-X II track in a separate set now and bounce to audio.

It seemed that the first version was made in synthedit with some custom modules .
Does anyone know the difference between the vst end the reaktor version , qualitywise ?
I had a look at the first version for reaktor and it was basically made of primary modules , no core modules whatsoever , I have a hard time beleving there a no differencese bewteen the vst and reaktor version
