Jeez this was tough, now I know the talent on this forum I'll have to up my game considerably to be in with a shout of winning this. I'm going to learn a lot participating in these competitions and hopefully my choons will improve.

Judging was really hard, I didn't know whether to vote based on most original use of Zebralette or best composition or just personal favourite. In the end I went for the latter and my criteria was the 5 tracks I would most want to listen to after getting back from the pub.

And the vote from Rotherham, UK is:

5pts: Joe Cat - Chasing Miss Peel
4pts: Akson - Free Canned Sardines
3pts: Flumba - Grumpy-Bot accidentally grows wings
2pts: Ancient - Ice Cream Summer
1pt: Evo2slo - Earn Your Stripes

Now to take a look at Charlatan, this will be a challenge after the wide pallete of sounds that the mighty Zebralette was able to provide.

Just like to say I've really enjoyed taking part in this challenge and find the spirit amongst the people on this forum is top class.

Two things I've taken away from this particular contest:

1) To keep things interesting, its not enough to come up with a decent groove, you have to maintain it for the length of the track. I was impressed with the way Ancient repeated the same refrain but it was constantly evolving and never became repetitive. I used the riff in my track more sparingly but never changed it, so it was always predictable.

2) To focus on the mix, there were some excellent mixes in this competition. I played mine on a DJ friends system and the mix sounded awful. To be fair I have only a laptop and a decent set of headphones but I need to learn how to sit sounds better in the mix.

Cheers

Indeed, really comes out that one or the other is not enough as all the parts count during voting, synth soundmaking too of course. But i think all will admit to style bias when it comes down to it, so there's that to think about as well. Maybe the KVR crowd wouldn't really appreciate the remix of that celtic astropunk number, no matter how clever it was done.. :P

My Vote:

1. 5PTS: evo2slo - Earn Your Stripes: My favorite track, really nice drums & fat sounds. Not least the cover and the title of the track are cool.

2. 4PTS: Akson - Free Canned Sardines, cause its funky.

3. 3PTS: JoeCat - Chasing Mrs. Peel, for those extra realistic orchester sounds.

4. 2PTS: IrionDaRonin - Asian Passion, realy nice mix.

5. 1PKT. ville - Precog Dreamer, for that solid drumlayering.

Would be nice to share the drumsounds :D I'd throw in kicks, tweakable snares and hihats.

5p: Ancient - Ice Cream Summer
Very nice track. I like everything about this, mixing, sounds & composition, that is why I think it deserves the first place.
4p: Joe Cat - Chasing Mrs. Peel
Epic composition, nice orchestral sound desing. Gives me that comical agent feel in a very good way.
3p: Bzur - Virgo's Eyes
Ahh, nice chilled stuff. Gives me kind of same feeling that some Pink Floyd tracks.
2p: Doc Jon - Iona Sunrise
Incredible sound desing, leaves me scratching my head, how did you manage all those sounds.
1p: Ville - Precoq Dreamer
Very nice style & sounds, drops on one of my favorite genres. Little generic feeling, but not much.

...

MrBlitz000 - Walter and Walter Redux
Brings back good memories when everything gets out of order and you try to whip all those slithering bastards back in line, until you realise it is impossible to control these things, just smile with them and go with it.

Yeager - Sebraskie Point
Nice, I escpecially like 01:14 - 02:40 part.

PainPotato - Red Shift
Very nice sounds & composition.

Flumba - Grumpy-Bot Accidentally Grows Wings
Cool track, only if mixing/sounds were little better & bass would not be so dull, it could have reached some points.

Irion Da Ronin - B.E.C
Very clean mix & nice sounds, but I think it is the composition, which is too generic or something to give me any real vibes. This is also the case in Asian Passion, I liked the B.E.C more.

Pete Dako - Moonlit Zebralette
Nice sounds & composition, with little more effort it could have reached some points.

Marks-a-Whybikky - Smoking a Zebralette
Only if you had the time to finish your tracks, this & your other track had some sounds I enjoyed most of all tracks in this competition, psydub/ambient ála bluetech, etc. which I listen most of the time.

..

Propably the hardest competition to decide who should get the points & there is still some tracks which should get mentioned, but I have no more time at the moment + it is sometimes hard to give proper feedback because english is not my native language.

btw. Ancient - Ice Cream Summer is missing from "All songs in one zip file".

Just noticed that myself. Had finally whittled my favorites down to 14 when I realized Ancient's was missing. Great, now I have 15 to try and choose from. Aaargh!!! :-o

Yeah that's terrible if u lost some points by this, but for those that judged from the zip download, check Ancient's brilliant number again and reconsider!

But u got a good deal last time so i hope that will even out a little.. :)

Well, I guess I'll have to scrap my first Charlatan track, then...

Yesss... finally getting the joke here .....you can turn it up to 'eleven' mode...x4 with all four OSCs in Zebra2...

from Zebralette manual-->"single / dual / quad / eleven
Selects single or stacked (2, 4 or 11) oscillators. The eleven mode could be called a su- perwave (not a supersaw, hypersaw, terrorsaw etc.) because the stacking effect works with any wave the oscillators can deliver."

Maybe a good time to remind or tell everybody here who doesn't already know that u-he forum is having a Zebralette Patch contest this month, so if you liked making Zebralette patches now you have a chance to upload two for the contest and another chance to win more u-he software!!!

Hmmm, too bad I didn't know they were doing an open 'Zebralette' patch contest before I uploaded all my favourite patches here to KVR's FREE public download library area  D'OH! :-o (filename: 'Moonlit Zebralette') when i entered this contest... :)
