I've got an aging but still fine imac from 2007. I don't want to retire it just yet, and I don't want to upgrade to a Mac pro, so I'm thinking of getting over a year or so 2 or 3 mac minis, I wonder if anyone has any experience with using the lowest spec new mac mini with ACE and filterscape.. Do they do the job or am I dreaming.
I thought that to get the 2 of base model 2 and upgrade them 6 Gb ram. I have plenty of external harddisks and a motu traveller mk3 interface.. My ideas is to eventually get Vienna studio pro for it's networking capabilty .
I looked at the mac minis today, extremely light and portable, Three of those and mac book air and I could travel the world with a sound monster mack modular in my backpack... Muhahaha
Anyways a new mac mini is probably equal to the lowest spec new imac or mac book pro. So hows it performing with ACE?
Regards

I have the bottom of the line macbook pro and had some crackles and pops on some ACE patches with the onboard sound at around 512 I think it was. With my external sound board, I have no such problems though. Sometimes the fan seems to spool up a bit but, I think that's more a MBP issue than a Mini.

That's interesting that would equal the performance almost that I'm getting with ACE on my 2007 imac. Some patches are pretty CPU intensive and won't really play in anything but draft mode, but I mostly get it to work.GruvSyco wrote:I have the bottom of the line macbook pro and had some crackles and pops on some ACE patches with the onboard sound at around 512 I think it was. What I'm after is to be able to play about 12 instances of heavy plugs with the 3 minis and have the Uhbik and effects on the main imac.
I just just balk at the idea that you have go out and buy a tower Mac Pro to achieve this..
I guess the problem is the CPU heavy plugs that I use are somehwhat open ended systems new ground breaking stuff.
ACE
NI RAZOR
Some Tassman patches
The NI True strike tension library
Any heavy duty sample library stuff.
Maschine
Anyways I'm not complaining as when I do get this working even if it takes a year or two since I started building my system I'll have a killer sound generating system in a very small and portable set up..
I don't want to accumulate any big debts with big cash outlays all at once, so that's why I've thought this mac mini modular system up with the Vienna Pro studio network..

Thanks for the info!

After thinking this out and reading up around the net. My super modular mini mac travel the globe with it all in a well organized carry on roller back pack setup.
Macbook air
3 x mac minis 2.7 GHz with SSD drives 8GB ram
fast internet hub
Vienna Pro
external SSD drive through Thunderbolt
Motu Traveller mk3
Launch Pad
Novation Nocturn
Maschine micro
Blofeld in checked bagage
Toothbrush
socks underwear. Gold Card.
Bazille Uhbik ACE Filterscape Zebra MFM NUMEROLOGY
The idea is to have the most amount of functionality in the ligthest package. Small is good when travelling, underpowered plugs are bad when performing this setup solves both problems. No I mean Yes?

I think I've found the ONE
It's the Mac mini server edition quad core 2.0 Ghz is much more powerful than the duo core.
The Mac book air is probably a too underpowered computer for the music set up so my list has changed..
Mac Mini server 2.0 Ghz quad core with 120 Gb SSD memory and 16 GB ram..
Mac Book pro 15" lowest spec but with 120 Gb SSD memory max ram
Then the other two mac minis will be redundant perhaps or I'll be getting them in a year or so. By that time the spec may have changed..
Interesting times. Mac modular, portable system. Who would have thought..
Remember Vienna Pro studio allows for link up of one master and three slaves. for easy transfer and sharing of files live audio and midi streams bus summing of audio out of the motu mk3.. Pretty slick.
ACE here I come.. Bazille where gonna be ready for you oy oy!

i used to have one of the old core 2 duo mini's. nowhere near today's specs, but i really loved it. i built a road rig using the mini, a 49 key controller, a 22" monitor, soundcard, and BCR2000 all wired up and mounted solidly in an anvil case. it was awesome - just pop it open and you're ready to rock
very happy with my current MBP now, but i really liked that rig setup. kinda thinking about doing that again, especially considering the specs of the minis... i predict you won't be disappointed.
