A couple of MDynamicEq questions:

If I click in an empty area of the graph below the centre line drag up / down I get this sort of shape.

-- what is it telling me?
-- how do I use it?

Also, I can adjust the node position by dragging it. Can I change the Q value too while hovering over the node or do I just drag the horizontal bar?

It's something like auto-listen - if you want to find some frequency for example, you can just click in the graph. The Q changes with vertical axis so that you can choose how narrow part of the spectrum you want to listen to.

I don't understand the second question. You can change Q using the nodes on the left and right and also using mouse wheel while hovering over the node.

Thank you for clarifying.

-- that (using the mousewheel) was the answer. :) i was trying various combinations of (right-)mouse-click and keyboard modifiers.

I really must read the user guide more closely but this is too much fun.

Aaaha, ok ;), I'm glad it's settled.

Actually you don't need to read documentation (personally I never do that :D ). It's just in 99% mousewheel does something, Ctrl is for "fine-tuning", Shift is for textual edit, and Alt, well, sometimes it is for something - I think it's for zooming-to-rectangle in graphs, I don't really use it. And I forgot - right mouse button is for "set default values" or get some popup menus.

With these settings, silent passages are increased by 6dB, and as the level increases the gain decreases, becoming -3dB when the sound is loud. So far, so good.

One thing that was throwing me is the display of the Dynamics I-beam. Its position does not seem to correspond to its value. I have a suggestion (no idea, whether this is possible or straight-forward):
show the end of the Dynamics I-beam at its effective value (e.g. Gain value + Dynamics value, +6dB + -9dB = -3dB).

Here's a mock-up showing what I mean

-- the first node shows the current behaviour,
-- the second shows the suggested Dynamics I-beam display
-- the third node adds in a secondary dynamics curve (for the "loud" sound)

Perhaps the default Dynamics value would be - Gain value (so loud sounds stay at their original level),

-----------
Perhaps take this a bit further. Instead of the Gain and Dynamics controls, have Gain (quiet) and Gain (loud) controls: Gain + +6dB and Dynamics + -9dB would become Gain (quiet) = +6dB and Gain (loud) = -3dB (those names are not good, but you get the idea).

Does this make sense?

Well, I'll think about it, but at the moment I don't really know... we'll see.

^^^^
Thank you, I'm glad that my explanation made sense. I guess drawing in the I-beam at a different position would be easier than the secondary curve.
