mix module as modulation source

I am wondering about something , since we can't do direct frequency modulation in zebra , modulate an osc.pitch with the pitch of another osc. ( not the fm osc .
But , when we route an osc .trough a mix module , this module becomes available as a modulation source for another osc.pitch ....but the result is nowhere near as fm ..
Care to explain urs ?
