Suggestion: Post Ratings

How about a post rating feature? A simple clickable thumbs up/down with numbers next to each would do it. And along with that, how about making each KVR member's total post ratings visible under their name? It might just help to modify behaviour for the better.

Why?

We dont give a thumbs up or thumbs down after normal conversations throughout the day.

Imagine doing that by that way. LOL.
Would love to give a thumbs up or a thumbs down to my boss after an important business meeting

I think this would probably result in a rash of "Oh yeah? Well, here's a thumbs down to you too!", in which case the usefulness would be nil.

You can disagree with someone, and you can mute them if they get you riled up. Many have been banned. I think this works out okay.

Well, I gave one good reason in the OP.

And post/member rating systems are implemented on other forums (/fora?) I've frequented.

In normal conversation there all all sorts of different cues by which we can communicate our approbation or disapproval.

Like I say, it works on other fora - and seems to modify behaviour for the better (people think twice about posting something that's likely to result in their post ratings going negative).

And isn't that a bit... cowardly, though? Lurking in the shadows, dealing out criticism without fear of retribution? Awfully craven - a Klingon certainly wouldn't approve.

It might help to "discipline" people, but it might also turn this forum into a place that's a lot less fun to be in.

Hmm... not dissatisfaction... it's more that there are so many members that it's difficult to keep up with who's pov is usually worth listening to and who's should be taken with a pinch(/bucket) of salt.

The posts izonin made yesterday are a case in point. In a month's time I'll have likely forgotten what a load of bollox he spouted - were his post ratings visible alongside his KVR name I would have more of an idea of how seriously to consider any future posts of his.

Muting a member doesn't work in quite the same way.

With a rating system, all you're going to end up with is a popularity contest and, with the number of sockpuppets that seem to be running around, one that's easily gamed. What you really want is a way to tag users with helpful descriptions like "pillock", "often right", "whatever this one says, do the opposite". A job for a Greasemonkey script perhaps rather than the forum?
