Thnks alot for the input guys. I noticed though that nobody has mentioned imposcar 2 which seemed to be one of the most anticipated synths for a long time. Is that a totally different animal or just didn't reach expectation?

Zebra

Go listen to the sound demos of the various commercial soundbanks... stellar sounds, diverse range... unbeatable IMO

Different animal. For what it does well it's great (retro/brassy synth sounds), but IMO it's not an all-rounder synth like you're asking for.

After listening to the on site demos, I agree with you 100%. Not a very full range sounding synth for what I'm talking about.

Yeah, I'm really leaning that way.

For the use you describe, it is a no brainer. Zebra is constantly being developed and new algorithms added based on the latest improvements from other U-he stuff. The GUI is a thing of beauty. Being that it is semi-modular it takes just a bit more time to understand it, but it is easy to work with once you do. Sometime in the next few months, 2.6 will be out with more cool stuff and as usual will be a free update. It has a serial number and no complicated copy protection. When there is a beta, it is usually more stable than many final releases.

Zebra also has the fine quality of being neutral as needed. Some synths always just sound like that synth whereas Zebra is more diverse and doesn't just sound like Zebra. In this way I think Zebra is particularly well suited to the work you describe.

Good way of descibing Zebra 2 pdxindy. After playing with the demo, the first thing I noticed is that it doesn't sound like one synth but like many which is what I'm after. A chameleon type synth for all purposes.

You summed it up pretty well. I'm impressed with number of 3rd party sounds as well as contributed sounds available and also the community support.
Now I'm just training my finger to hit the buy button.

I checked out the Albino 3 and while the demo songs sound good, they all have a similar sound to them within a narrow field of synth if that makes sense.
So far the Zebra 2 is where I'm seriously considering.

In case you don't know yet.
The Zebra demo will load and save sounds.
So you can try out many from here.

Thanks for the info mcnoone. That spells confidence when you can load and save sounds in a demo. Wow! Just checkrd it out. Hopefully they can be used in commercial productions. Didn't see it staed that they can't. I'm going to pull the buy trigger on this synth before the night is out.

Before purchasing Zebra I would recommend to have a short look at:

Gladiator 2
Harmor

Both I'm using for a longer time - rather for "conventional" sounds.
Harmor is an additive one, which can import anything converting the samples into graphics in high sound quality.

Pro's:
Gladiator - excellent sound quality, more than thousand presets.
Tweaking sounds is not very challenging.
Harmor: sound quality, can be used as a sampler with a huge range of import possibilities (complex samples, any graphics, too).
Contra's: Harmor needs a longer training to create high quality presets.

I would check out CPU load of Zebra: I red somewhere it eats a lot of CPU power but I haven't own experiences.
