Both Hans Zimmer and Mel Wesson noticed the similarity a few years ago. At that time I was claiming that Zebra2 has no inherent character, and therefore couldn't have a "basic sound similar to the Jupiter 8". I changed my mind - these days I'll happily admit that clean is the character that characterizes (sic) both the Jupiter 8 and Zebra2 emulations of same.
I've thought for a while now that there was something about Zebra that at least vaguely sounded "Roland-esque" to me (as in Roland's '80s analog synths). Something about the envelopes too...that sort of bouncy/boingy contour that puts me in mind of a JP8/Juno. Tyrell really has that quality as well.

That's because Howie programs Zebra for Hans when he's not working for me :)

Ok, all examples so far (and the proof that I'm a really bad keyboard player)

Note that these are not done with final tunings. We did an optimisation that screwed up all levels. I won't guarantee that the end result will sound exactly liek above examples.

I do look forward to the DIVA stuff in zebra!

i tried to make a "BOOOM" sound from a live upright bass with zebrify - which i got easily by doubling the bass line with a Tyrell factory bass patch (filter closed slightly more). but i wanted the upright to get that sound on its own.

i experimented with

LP 6db --> XMF with a little resonance and overload, pretty much closed and a little envelope follower modulation on the cutoff --> another XMF just for a little saturation

the sound i got went in the direction i wanted but there was WAY too much "hissy" stuff from the distortion during the attack of the sound. so i really hope for that moog ladder filder. or the Tyrell filter, of course.
