I thought I've noticed that something's odd with the lane volume modulation but now I'm certain.

try this:

-Default patch.
-Select ModWhl (true with any other mod source) for the 1st lane's volume modulation.
-Set volume max, MW mod to min.
-While playing a note and bringing the MW up, you'll decrease the volume from max to min. So far so good.

Now, try the other way around. (vol min and MW mod to max).. there will be no action!
I don't know if this is a bug... but I'm not seeing it's "feature" side of it :D

However, this works fine if I set it up within the mod matrix instead. (VCA1: Volume1 modulated by MW)
Odd, isn't it? :?

Yep, I noticed this too, felt it was very weird and shouldn't be like that.

It's a tricky thing to stumble on, but the explanation is simple. The VCA knob is scaled by the Mod knob, ( VCA ) * ( Mod ). Most other places are ( Volume ) + ( Mod ).

Yeah.. and the thing is... that all of the patches that are especially using a negative VCA modulation will act different if this should get "fixed"... so.. hm.. well.. we'll always have the mod matrix :D ... btw I'm running out of space there as well

It is not a bug I think. IIRC it is intended but I don't recall the explanation

it's the dilemma of polyphonic synths. The volume of a synth voice indicates if a voice is played or not. A softsynth will put a silent voice on standby when it isn't heard.

If any modulator was allowed to modulate the vca like other parameters, then all voices would need to always play at once, even those that were considered off. Thus if you play a 3-note chord on an 8-voice synth and you Modwheel the volume back in, then all those 5 other voices will play up, too, with the note you last left them with.

It is for that reason that VCA modulation doesn't add but multiply. That way the VCA envelope will cause silence when ready, no matter what the LFO. It is however also a bit awkward to use and sometimes unpredictable. Negative or bipolar modulation is flawed even (could have been done better... my bad... will figure omething out maybe...)

Cheers,

Urs

Maybe changing the text on the knob to 'via' instead of 'mod' would clarify?
