As far as factory presets are concerned there's probably only one synth where I rarely mess with the factory presets and use them as shipped. That would be Minimonsta. Coming in second would be Papen's Blue. I could mess with both but I rarely do.

After that it comes down to 3rd party libraries. And it's a bit of a toss-up for me between Zebra and Alchemy. Both have very good factory presets, no doubt. Both have very impressive efforts from some really good sound designers (3rd party stuff). In addition I find very little (if any) crossover between the 3rd party sounds I get for each synth. As a result they seem to compliment each other nicely. And for the few times that I have worked on some post/prod stuff for video I was happy that I had them both. In that environment the deadline is king and I have no qualms about being a preset whore if it gets the job done :)

With a gun to my head I guess I would pick Zebra due to the massive number of free presets in the UL. But I find both environments pretty deep in the preset category. Both synths could use a better preset managing system though.
I had the Minimonsta demo and decided against it. A little too electronic sounding for me. Blue sounded nice especially the pads and arps but again, just not "It".
I decided on the Alchemy player and four of the sound packs and will probably get Zebra2. A big factor in choosing Zebra is the number of free presets out there, constant effort to improve it,Great support according to many, and plenty of tutorial videos should I decide to explore it beyond the presets.I'm still not 100% but I'm a good 85% sure.
Between my Omnisphere,Alchemy,Sylenth1,FM8,Absynth5 and Massive,Zebra2 should be a hell of a fine finish for my synth hunting for awhile.
I did try Fab Filter's synth but quickly lost interest though I found it interesting. Volcano actually seemed to offer some good possibilities no matter what synth I chose. Don't know if that would be redundant if I chose Zebra since it seems to have virtually the same thing.
What I really like about Zebra and most of my other synths for that matter over Omnisphere is patch loading time. It's instant. That's why I seldom use Omnisphere. Omnisphere is a great synth but patch loading definitely slows workflow so Zebra would get more use for that reason alone.

when surfing through patches in omnisphere, 'preview' load is your friend :D

ReFX NEXUS BEST ALL AROUND VST PERIOD IMO. THE PRESETS ARE GREAT AND THERE IS QUITE A FEW. THERE'S ALSO TON OF EXPANSIONS FOR IT

I see it already has been mentioned a few times (thanks!). OP-X PRO-II comes with a huge library of more than 1500 sounds (no filling stuff! only 1a sounds) which has grown over a period of 5 years, and it even is being extended regularly with new free reloads.

Some audio examples of the included presets:

dblock, I do understand what you're saying here, and I think Zebra is a brilliant synth, but you started a thread about presets.

How can you compare the most complicated patch possible in Zebra to the mega-sampled soundsources in Omnisphere? Anything comparable to Zebra in Omnisphere loads instantaneously for me, but you have to compare apples to apples here.

If you load huge samples into anything it certainly may hamper your work flow, and what doesn't work for you - well - I wouldn't use them either. But ironically Spectasonics really handles those huge samples better than anything comparable I've run across.

Try loading the Grand Piano full range from the East/West stuff, or Ringo's toms in the Abbey Road collection into Alchemy (I love Alchemy too) and prepare to almost forget what you're doing.

I know a lot of this is system dependent, but I'm not aware of Omnisphere being any slower than any synth I have. It's one of those Omnisphere myths that just gets repeated over and over again.

I get your point about omnisphere loading times, but.. When you are auditioning sounds, it doesn't really differentiate between sounds that are sample based and sounds that are synth based, it kind of lumps them together. Maybe I need to look at it again.

Is there a way to select non sample based sounds on the omnisphere? Otherwise it just feels clunky when I'm trying to work fast.

Best for me what i are Blue,Albino (latest versions) and Omnisphere is also good but some presets are bit too weird needs. and even Logic soft synths have nice presets. Even Arturia, and Synth1 have good presets i know Arturia can be buggy (i tested demos and they most buggy music software what i know) and sound not very analog but i still like many presets in them.

If you like presets, get Absynth! The randomizer is excellent and lets you have infinite presets. ;)

Yes the sounds are definitely not for everyone. I really like those experimental out there kind of sounds. Another reason I like the absynth sounds is because I'll never come with that kind of thing on my own, I make much different sounds than that and don't have the patience for the absynth interface much. But the presets and mutation function I do find inspiring.

You already have more than enough. Save your money.

I love having a ton of synths myself, especially since I don't typically enjoy programming my own sounds. I have like 5x more than that. :)

I guess it's all relative.

+1

Also Wavestation is cool, if you're into "digital" retro-sounds.
