Glitchy, distorted noise and random MIDI notes from Consequence

Hello Rico and everyone at Sugar Bytes,

This is in reference to a problem I have been having with Consequence, which I first reported to Sugar Bytes support in September. Specifically, since purchasing a legitimate license for Consequence, I have been unable to successfully use the program either as a standalone or as a plugin within Ableton Live, because when I choose the "midi" input method in order to play my own notes or send note messages using midi clips, all I get is distorted, glitchy, metallic noise. The arrows above the keyboard at the bottom of the GUI also indicates that random, rapidly changing MIDI notes are being outputted by the software, and also, some of the knobs are rapidly moving back and forth.

I have re-downloaded the latest version of Consequence as well as the Library numerous times on different ISPs, computers and even in different countries, and the same problem happened again: random and rapidly moving MIDI messages, distorted and metallic sound, and the knobs in the GUI look like they're twitching, as some are moving back and forth rapidly when I send MIDI notes to Consequence, either by playing MIDI clips or by entering notes via a MIDI or computer keyboard.

This same problem has happened on fresh, newly formatted Vista and Windows 7 boots, as well as a separate, also newly-formatted Windows XP computer, in both standalone and VST versions. I've re-downloaded the installers multiple times but the problem still persists each time I do a new install. I've even reformatted my computer a few times as a drastic measure, but the same problem happens.

Because Consequence was not actually crashing, there are no crash logs to send. The problem is that the software is not behaving as it should, making it pretty much useless.

I've until now never been able to use the program successfully, which is very disappointing. I've also not received any solutions or concrete advice from support.

I hope you can advise me soon on what I can do about this.

Thank you,

Karlo

Hi Karlo,

Consequence is not a normal virtual instrument. In fact consequence is a sequencer and sound engine. If you send MIDI into it, it triggers certain patterns. You can also sync consequence to your host, so you won't need any MIDI input at all.
>"all I get is distorted, glitchy, metallic noise"
I am not sure whether this is a misbehaviour or if it's just a certain preset.
Start using Consequence by pressing play in the bottom of the sequencer part.
Try some different global presets to get an idea of the possibilities.

Hello Robert,

I'm fully aware of what Consequence is and how it works, as I used an unlicensed version for several months before deciding to buy a legitimate license. I know what the Consequence presets and the different instruments are supposed to sound like, and I know all about the patterns that the software plays, and I am absolutely certain that my purchased software is not working as it should.

My preferred way of using it is to use the "midi" input method, as opposed to "manual" or "sequence", as I like using my MIDI keyboard to enter notes (to trigger patterns, like you said). I also draw in MIDI clips in Ableton and use these to trigger Consequence patterns.

However, as I explained to Rico in several e-mails since September, after I re-installed the latest version of Consequence with my legitimate, purchased license, the software has been behaving very strangely and so my purchase has been useless until now. As I wrote in my previous messages, when I trigger Consequence using the "midi" input method, the arrows above the keyboard in the bottom part of the GUI indicates that very random, unmusical, rapidly shifting MIDI notes are being outputted by the software, and also some of the knobs in the GUI are randomly and quickly moving back and forth.

Also, as I said, I get a very unpleasant, metallic, glitchy noise instead of normal sound of the Consequence instruments/presets. This same grating, glitchy noise is heard regardless of the preset used.

This happens whenever I use the "midi" input method, in both the standalone program and in the plugin version in Ableton Suite 8.2.6.

If necessary, I can send you a recording of this noise and take a video capture of the software so you can see exactly what I am talking about.

Again, I've tried a lot of things to resolve this problem. I've tried installing on freshly formatted Windows 7, Vista and XP boots on different computers. I've tried different external soundcards and also my onboard soundcards. I've tried reformatting my computers. I've tried re-downloading the latest version of Consequence and the Consequence library several times. However, none of these have worked and the exact same thing happens each time I try to use the "midi" input method of Consequence. This is the way I prefer to use the software and so it is important that I be able to do so.

Just so you know, I also tried installing the cracked copy of Consequence that I first used before I bought the software, and the "midi" input worked perfectly. I don't understand why a cracked copy would work but a legitimate, licensed copy won't.

It's been three months since I bought Consequence and it still has not worked as it should. I enjoy Sugar Bytes products very much, but it is disheartening that since paying for Consequence, it has never worked as it's supposed to and no solution for this has been offered since I first reported it. I am a Thesys owner as well, and was planning to get Turnado and Guitarist, but I am worried that other Sugar Bytes products will also turn out to be defective.

Looking forward to concrete advice on how to resolve this issue.

Sincerely,

Karlo
