While I hate to sound morbid, there is always the off chance that Urs could get hit by a bus, get sick of programming, or join a monestary. I know I might be a bit more particular regarding the risks and issues with various software companies - I get annoyed by software that becomes NFT, or the transfer fees are too high, or the support sucks, or the copy protection is overly obtrusive, etc... and Urs has none of these problems. He's pretty much 10s across the board.

But is there any sort of contingency plan in place to keep the company going if Urs is ever not able to? I believe he's hired a couple of programmers, but I was hoping to get some clarification. I at least know with a company like NI (who I certainly have issues with at times) that they will keep rolling regardless of what happens to their lead programmer.

If it hits my wife and myself, then we're stuffed.

Otherwise she'll continue with Clemens and maybe sell out, I don't know. However, Clemens knows a lot of my code by now, Zebra isn't an endangered species without me.

Just to clarify - I'd much rather Urs quit programming or join a monastery than get hit by a bus. But I'm not looking for him to take any of the above options!

And it is reassuring to hear that there is some sort of contingency in place. Whether or not Clemens could fill your shoes doesn't really matter so long as support and development goes onward.

Regarding the TB-303, no one's mixer suddenly went 64 bit or required an OS upgrade either. Comparing hardware to software in terms of lifecycle is truly apples and oranges. Or at least Apples to Moogs.

There will come a time when said software is no longer supported.
You have two choices. a) maintain an old computer with it on or b) accept it's time to move on.

How long has Kontakt been around, supported, and upgraded? A lot of software has fallen by the wayside over that time.

Part of buying software is expecting ongoing support, or at the very least, discounted upgrades. If we all expected software to become completely (or mostly) worthless at some random point in our lifetimes we'd never buy it.

This is what I don't understand and makes me feel sorry for developers.
They sell the software and theyre locked in in perpetuity with maintenance expectations.
Surely there should be a "warranty" period, beyond which updates/maintenance cannot be guaranteed.

They would be chargeable updates if you want to keep using it on Windows 26 or Apple Panda Bear.
Otherwise you maintain an old computer.

Do you honestly expect developers to provide free updates for stuff they sold >5 years ago?
