The samples, and the possibility to cross-mod and sync samples (JD-990)... The filters are pretty good for digital filters of the age. They can clip like a bitch, but if you know how to tweak, you can make them quite juicy and nice.

Michael Kastrup spent considerable time making breathy / airy presets in his latest set "Hybrids". Check out the youtube demo vids, you might hear a sound or two that you're after:

Michael is a sound designer par excellence! Hybrids and OldSkool volumes are awesome value for money!

No kidding! I have his older sets and absolutely love them. I had not come across Hybrids for some reason. Gorgeous sounds in there!

There are some breathy / airy sorts of sounds in the demos yet nothing quite like the thick and lush breathiness of these JD-800 pads. I am definitely going to pick up these anyway for all the other beautiful sounds to be had here.

I would love to see the thick luscious JD-800 pad sounds in Zebra someday. Maybe someone could sample these waveforms and run them through Wav2Zebra for us...

I own the JD 990 and this old hardware got something which Roland forgot to put in newer models. Funny of all productions i was in on in the 80's i used Roland JV 80 the most along with my AKAI sampler :hihi: I was very happy to see that JD 990 ate my JV 80 presets without any problems :)

Anyways, breath, fastest way to create breath is Square waveform and lots of Unison 11

Slowest way, additive saw like waveform with lots of high level harmonics and then lots of Unison.

The obvious thing Noise wont do it unless you fake some formant using the 2 EQ's.

Thx for the Oldskool and Hybrids praise :)

Short list:

1. SH-101
2. Yamaha CS-[anything]

Why has nobody made a proper sh101 emulation yet? We have multiple Moogs, Prophets, ARPs, and even emulations of obscure synths from France, but still no proper emu of one of the most popular analog synths of all time?! And don't talk about the D16 vaporware. I'll believe it when I see it.

We are also seriously lacking in Yamaha's offerings. The CS-80 wasn't their only analog.

Thanks for the tips Michael! How do you think these tricks match up with the thick breathy / airy yet smooth pads in the JD 990 (assuming it has similar pads to the JD 800)? I am wondering if these are possible. It seems that maybe it takes samples to really get all the way there...

JD-990 is everything JD-800 is, and then some ;)

Honestly, i like those i made for Hybrids better since its synthesized breath meaning no artifact and clean all over the keyboard range.

On the other hand if your looking for a 100% replica then your best off with samples.

When i try to copy those oldtimers i know i cant get all things right but then i focus on the overall expression of the sound. Thats what i aim for when doing those types of presets. Staccato Heaven and Fantasia both used samples which were vital to the overall sound and since i could not use samples i had to FAKE the spectrum they covered. Turned out good but only after tons of trial and error. Breath was one of the last hard things to replica but i got it in the end. Try listen to the other demos like:

Thanks for this discussion Michael! These are really brilliant sounds and I know they are way cleaner and will be better suited in many cases! :) I am looking forward to buying Hybrids for use in my next project.

Did you check out the JD-800 video posted on the previous page?

Check out the pads at 1:30 and 6:00 and 9:30. There is a thick, smooth, "cotton-like" kind of aspect to the sound which I am not hearing in the Hybrids demo, especially in the sound at about 6:00. I am certainly not after a 100% replica, but rather this overall character. Do you think this character is possible to synthesize in Zebra?

And by the way: Most of the über synth nerds I know have the opinion that the JD-800/990 has the worst filter ever :hihi:
That doesn't change that it's THE synth for cold gital pads though :)
But nothing Zebra cant do better.

I agree w/ Dennis.
Roland D50/550 is the classic.

Tubeohm Vintage is the emulation of a D50 architecture already,- well, the architecture.
Without Roland's permision using their original sample sets in a plugin, any accurate emulation of all the sample based Roland synths and ROMplers will never exist.

I'm fine w/ my Roland D550 w/ Musitronics memory/speedkit expansion, MIDI multi mode and extended routings since decades and never needed any JD model for any studio work since I used KORG Wavestation SR and M1Rex in addition for the 80th/90th sound.

So, in software, Korg Legacy digital collection, Tubeohm Vintage and some converted sample sets (EMU & AKAI) for Kontakt nail the sound pretty good.
Also, Bitley's Fairlight XXL Refill for Reason 5/6 is a great software addition for the 80th/90th sound !

I stopped buying Roland synths w/ the purchase of the D550.
The Roland classics are JP-4, JP-8, JP-6, MKS80, JX-8P, MKS70 and the D50/550 and I worked w/ all of these.

Martin Lueder's PG8X nails the JX-8P sound pretty good IMO !

I quickly tried to get a JX-8P like sound out of Diva. At least I always associate this kind of lush pad with the JX-8P.
The sound is a bit inspired by the famous "soundtrack" preset:

It's nothing finished and just a quick try but Diva can indeed spit out some nice pads

Very, very nice! :)

I'd kill for an Orgon Enigizer emulation. It sounds like nothing else!

Cheers!

Here are the digital/breath type patches i found in Hybrids, some of them clearly have breath type but if its what your looking for i dont know :)

Those examples from the demos you posted are best done the additive way with lots of unison.
