A question to anyone.

Watching a detective t,v drama last month, I noticed someone using a mini touch screen extension.

I realised I may be missing something, but you can buy small touch screens as extensions to your pc. (Checked prices etc)

Has anyone been using them, with there DAW and Vst set up, if so can your enlighten me on what the low 's and highs are?

Your best bet is to try a Windows tablet in a store, to see if you like how it works. The experience with a like sized touch monitor should be similiar.

People seem to think current versions of Windows are not suitable for touch control, but I didn't mind it when I did the above. (of course you probably won't be able to try it with a daw.)

Flight sim users would be more familiar with this kind of tech.

I have a 22" monitor, the thought of keeping my arm outstretched to keep dabbing gives me RSI just thinking about it. Id rather have a keyboard near where my hands are and same with the mouse. The only solution is to have the screen lying down taking up real estate on your desk. For portable, touch is viable but for larger screen, would be tricky.

I have 2 24" monitors, but I'd love to have a third multitouch one, lying down. I really hope for the big DAW makers to start making their software touch compatible (Steinberg in my case). Imagine having one monitor dedicated to the project timeline, one for instruments and effects and one multitouch beside you lying down, dedicated to the mixer. Plus you could easily switch views between them and use the multitouch for editing synths and controlling automation when needed. The technology is there, it must be coming..

@olia, you should give the iPad + Logic + TouchOSC combo a try.

Or Touch OSC for Windows (also on Android) :

Oh I have TouchOSC, and even the new Lemur app, they are great, but actually controlling cubase first hand with your fingers would be on another level, every control would be available to tweak with your hands without starting up another device or program.. that's my dream scenario.

Here is something new:

USB Touch screen extension

You have always been able to just use a regular touch screen of course:

Elo Touch

And you might want to supplement that with VNC at some point.

There's some really interesting touchscreens out, and I've tried VNC for the iPad, but to really be able to use multitouch with a DAW it has to be integrated into the software. For now you just get a mousepointer where your finger is, or that's how I understood it. I guess all will change with windows 8, which is supposedly based on touch interaction.

Websockets will happen soon too. It should make all of this other stuff obsolete (IMO). I submitted a proposal requesting that we at least we get outbound communications happening...we'll see what happens.

my friend and i have talked this over.. touchscreen seems like a better investment right now for music than a windows 8 tablet - but, you still wont be running your whole DAW with it - i think that it would be good for specific applications such as your mixer sliders or a pattern sequencer.. drag a set of controls over to it and set it up how you like rather than using a pre built app or struggling to run entire programs which were not written with touch in mind.. i imagine that it can be convenient and expressive, but we need 2012 software that is finger friendly..

Here a 2012 software, specially dedicated to live performance and touchscreen, fully customizable

funny.. i downloaded Usine last night for a completely different reason.. my first encounter with it.. it does indeed look like exactly what one would use.. i'll wager though that within 2 years we will have touch friendly GUIs on Cubase REAPER, etc.. just because tons of people will have windows 8 tablets.. then we could even have multi touch VSTs..
