I started transcribing Jupiter-8 factory patches from Roland's original patch sheets. I stumbled onto a problem while working on the first patch NEG SYNC. I can't seem to find a way to reverse the polarity of Analogue Env 1. Under Amplifier & Pan I selected Invert as the modifier, but I didn't hear any difference. Any ideas?

Arsenal,
If you set the filter mod to 'Multiply', and set Multiply to 'Env2 x Invert' does that accomplish what you want?

Post

Sorry, should read "...set Multiply to 'Env1 x Invert'...".

The modulation knob when set to 12 o'clock is at zero. Values to the right of twelve o'clock are positive and values to the left are negative.
You can get reasonably close to that sync sound but it seems the resonance needs to be pushed to get the same 'clink' on the start of the envelope (attack with lots of envelope modulation) - check out the sound demos on synthmania to really nail this sound.

Just a small hint: I already replicated a few Jupiter 8 patches in my factory sounds for Diva. See at folder THIRD PARTY\Ingo Weidner
The presets start either with "Jupiter" or "JP-8". FMR has done a lot of Juno and Jupiter presets too.

This site is very helpful as it includes both the patch sheets and audio demos:
http://www.synthmania.com/jupiter-8.htm

For the calibration of the parameters the demo version of Arturia Jupiter 8V could be helpful too. The sound of the Arturia synths is not always a 100% correct emulation (same for Jupiter 8V) but the parameters are usually quite precise.

Yes, sorry, Diva's knob positions and ranges have nothing in common with whatever original hardware was "covered". For instance, the maximum amount of filter envelope on a Minimoog is 5V = 5 octaves = 60 semitones, where Diva does 120 semitones. Sometimes Diva has smaller ranges, sometimes larger.

This was necessary when squeezing parts from 8 synthesizers into a single box. We had to come up with a common denominator (which we mostly took from Ace and Zebra, for our convenience :) )

One sound that can not be done in Diva is using Osc 1 as Sync master for Osc 2 while crossmodulating Osc 1 by Osc 2. In Diva it's always Osc 1 that's master for everything (sync, fm, filter fm). Doing this was my own decision, because I find the other way round less useful (fm amount just detunes the oscillators, but does not change timbre much)

Cheers,

Urs

Thanks for all of the responses! I certainly don't expect a one to one relationship between my trusty Jupiter 8 and DIVA. But, I did want to see how far I could push it. I'll give the Multiply/Env 1x Invert a try. I knew there was something I was just overlooking. Likewise, testing on the Jupiter 8V demo is a great idea.

I should say that I love the Ingo Weidner and FMR banks. With all of the discussion about the topology, no one has mentioned that the presets are possibly the best to ship with any analog-style plugin.

And, thanks to Urs for building such a beautiful synth. It's really got me excited about programming again.

Arsenal, are you sure you are not missing the fact that the Envelope Modulation knob is positive AND negative?
move to the right it is positive, move to the left it is negative.
At least that I how used it to replicate the Neg Sync patch.

or am I misunderstanding you?

Hmm.. I thought it was ho66it who was missing that (because he suggested a complicated way to achieve exactly the same effect as direct negative modulation).

No, I didn't miss that, I was just wrongly thinking that using the Multiply function would exaggerate the signal and maybe provide a greater inverse effect. I'm still way down the learning curve here...
And, as pointed out earlier, I probably should have just been using my ears instead of trying to think!

You should be able to get a pretty good approximation of that sound without having to modify the envelope amount further than what the knob gets to.

Here is my take on that sound: http://www.box.com/s/7xdluoni93fjlb0fjnzg

I am interested in how this could be refined further.

Eureka!

The problem was the amount of negative ENV 2 modulation I was applying. I started all the way negative, which simply makes my version of the patch silent. This threw me off completely. I started looking for other ways of doing the same thing, without sweeping the knob far enough back. Impatient! Thanks to all of you, I've got over my learning curve hump. As it turns out, ENV 2 should modulate the cutoff by something like -20.00. I notice Mogular's goes to -63.61. But, with my version of the patch everything goes silly.

I've managed to copy NEG SYNC pretty well, but I'll try to fine tune it. There's still something about the weightiness in the sustain of the sound I haven't quite captured.

Thanks to all of you for taking the time to help with this. It's greatly appreciated!

Mine goes a long way down in order to try to match the clink at the start of the sound. Plus the decay (upwards movement of the cutoff) is very long on the samples on synthmainia.com

If you have a Jupiter 8 maybe you can post some samples of that patch to see if we can match it to yours. Maybe without reverb as the synthmania ones have reverb which can make it appear that there is more happening in the sound than what there is.

Decided to "have a go" at the Neg Sync sound, with the Synthmania version as the basis.

Anyway, here's the original Synthmania version..

The Synthmania version has something going on with the stereo image (dual mono, or something, which then switches at the end) which I didn't spend time to figure out.

Here's my Diva version

I downloaded the FMR bank- there are loads of juno presets but only one Jupiter 8 patch - is that normal?
