I participated here in the past and just tought i could give this another go for fun.

Some rules are new tough, no host eq? I rarely use any other. Is there a free multiband eq i can use?
And i think reverbs are out of question either way?
Hi. You could use EasyQ, this is the one i'm using, easy to tweak and good results.
Reverbs are ok, but not the one in your daw. Must be free and available for all (where available means that you actually can download it from a legal source).
Have a good day and have fun :)

As promised, an Icelandic folk song!

Gorgorgathgorgorgor - Krummavísur

six instances of Kairatune in Reaper

Ferric TDS
Baxter Eq
Loudmax
Nasty DLA

Some Lyrics translated from the Icelandic...

Everything is frozen outside You can't get anything at the

beach I'm so hungry I'm so hungry If I go to a house The dog

forbids me To eat from the garbage Eat from the garbage The

raven slept in a rock-rift The raven slept in a rock-rift The

earth is covered in ice You can't see the ground at all

Full-fledged birds are capable of Full-fledged birds are

capable of But even though I look everywhere There's just one

color What can a raven eat What can a raven eat?

Ok, My lovely wife hated my flappy clappy snare thing, so I have replaced it with another snare thing...

I am programming some sounds on Kairatune that have a slow attack and a slow release. The problem is, if I play a note while the previous note is still in its release stage, there is an audible click. When playing in legato mode it is fine, but if there is a slight gap between my finger coming off one key and my hitting the next there is an annoying click. Here is my question. Is this a bug or a feature?

From a logical point of view, I recognize that if you play over a note in its release stage on a monophonic synth, the synth has to go from the current value to zero in order to start the attack for the new note. Does this always have to be accompanied by a click?

Please bear with me if this is a stupid question, but I really haven't done any programming on monosynths before. Thanks.

My apologies. This is a problem i haven't yet found a solution. :( The click is a sudden change in amplitude that is caused by the next note having different velocity from the previous note. This becomes clearly audible with long attack and long release as you describe, especially if you have low LPF cutoff frequency. The problem is that the velocity envelope is after the LPF and therefore not damped.

The velocity must have a pretty quick response (i.e. fast slope) or the result will be worse in some cases. You can eliminate the click by setting velocity sensitivity to 0dB, but then you'll have no velocity response at all. I'd say this is a design flaw rather than a bug - certainly not desired, sorry. It's a feature in a sense that i've been aware of this and chose to use this kind of velocity behaviour for the sake of it's benefits.

The other envelopes are not restarting from zero but from their current state when retriggered. As i explained above i don't think this is causing the click. Try setting velocity sensitivity to zero and the sound behaves nice and smooth.

Edit: Just to clarify. The envelopes are not picking up from their current state, as in phase, but from their current value. This applies to all envelopes.

It's a perfectly reasonable question. Not all monosynths behave like this. Kairatune is a bit - should i say special - and has these things. Most of them are there by design and there will always be some trade-offs and some things you simply can't do with it. :)

mfa, thanks for the explanation. If it is the velocity, I can live with that. The patches I am working on, while they benefit from velocity, don't require it. I can use some external amplitude moduation for the effect I want and that will work fine. I realize the sounds I am programming are outside the normal usage of this plugin, but what is the good of an OSC if we don't truly stretch the abilities of the synth.

Thanks again for giving us this wonderful toy to play with. I am having a blast with it. I came up with nine new patches last night and I am looking forward to doing some more tonight.

VERY USEFUL

Anyone managed to get a solid clap or even snare out of this synth? I've managed a very nice low pitch string, a sturdy kick, passable hats, solid effects and a nice bassline but I can't for the life of me get a reasonable snare or clap out of this thing.

Quite the impressive synth as per usual.

I don't know what you qualify as reasonable snare or clap, :) but in addition to the usual fast downward pitch envelope, filtering and distortion, you can make interesting timbres with high frequency vibra and trill modulation. The amount of modulation can be controlled with envelopes as well. So you should be able to create all kinds of punchy percussive sounds. For the clap you might want to play with a very short feedbackless delay. Just a few ideas that came to mind.

Thanks! I hope you find the sounds you like. :)

Thanks for the tips, I'm not nearly as accomplished as the rest of the folks around here, but I'm learning.

As I mentioned before, I went through some snare pain as well, and ended up kind of settling for what I got (and yes, the trill is fun!). I had a slap-back thing like mfa suggests, but that's the one my lovely wife vetoed!

This is a really great fun synth to play with, and there is a possibility that I will manage my first ever entry to OSC this month after several aborted attempts with previous contests. I'm struggling to create a snare sound and also fighting with Reaper to get my automation curves doing the right thing (I'm trying to automate the trill depth in whole semitone steps).

Post

I've uploaded a snare drum patch. It's a modified version of Alv Faria's Snare 2. I've added some FM. I hope this'll give a starting point to anyone who's not getting any snares out of the synth. Please notice that the tuning of these snares is pretty much controlled by a peaking EQ and not that much by note pitch. Check out Alv Faria's and ENV1's banks for other kinds of percussion.

The easiest way to do this is to record the automation through the GUI. Editing the automation curves manually will be difficult i'm afraid.

I just noticed that you can't get an arbitrarily short delay out of the synth's delay FX, so this indeed won't work the way i suggested without an external delay plugin.
