stupid question; how do i set up audio record in v 4? worked fine in v 3 but can't get it working in v4! assume i must be setting up modules wrongly so a template set up for audio recording would be useful in v 4 cos have used different daw's for years and never been unable to set them up so a newbie may have same issue.

In the transport section you find the record button. Left of it is the audio recording setup.
Right click it to setup:
- pre-count
- file name for saving the recording
- record source (audio in, a rack, etc.)
- monitoring
- auto normalize
- number of channels to record
When this is done, just hit record.
I will do a template session and ask Jo to add it to the package.

I did a quick test with no inputs assigned and i don't get crashes.
Can you check in the Session Modular Area/double click the Main Audio Input, if the inputs are set to the correct ones?
In the Session Modular Area, is the Recorder (probably named after the file name you setup for recording) connected correctly?

What computers: OSX or Windows?plutonia wrote:have tried that on 3 computers with 2 diff usb interfaces (fast track and scarlett 2i2)but doesn't work or crashes mu lab!
Can you please also give a detailed description of the steps you're taking and at what point the crash occurs. Thanks.

i'm using win 7 or xp. just used win 7 on main pc and crashed again when i was assigning input/output modules. I notice 'Choose target Module' option is gone and reckon i'm missing summit in workflow here cos that seems important function.
anyhow, got following crash file info:

Which exact MuLab version are you using?
Is this crash repeatable? If yes, which exact steps do i have to take to repeat the crash?
Thanks.

jo, it's the free 4.08 version. i recorded audio no problem on mu lab 3 although the relationship between racks/modules/tracks is not clear cut in either version and i think this requires clarification. templates for given purpose(s) might be the answer. i will try again later today when i get back home and post info on steps. i still haven't recorded any external audio in mu lab 4 - might be the measure of my stupidity. lol. i do reckon a template for recording and also an explanation of module path required would be useful so that users better understand modular system and how to achieve what they require.

Oops, don't know that version. A typo?plutonia wrote:jo, it's the free 4.08 version.
Ok. MuLab should never crash, so there seems to be a bug anyway.i recorded audio no problem on mu lab 3 although the relationship between racks/modules/tracks is not clear cut in either version and i think this requires clarification. templates for given purpose(s) might be the answer. i will try again later today when i get back home and post info on steps.
So i'm looking forward to the steps i need to take to repeat that crash!
Does this help:i still haven't recorded any external audio in mu lab 4 - might be the measure of my stupidity. lol. i do reckon a template for recording and also an explanation of module path required would be useful so that users better understand modular system and how to achieve what they require.
In the Session Modular Area, you can see in detail how audio is flowing, so that should give you a clear view.
The Audio Recording Setup dialog is just a user friendly (i hope) wrapper around the modular routing in the SMA.
Nothing essential has changed between M3 and M4 wrt audio recording, besides that the Audio Recording Setup dialog has been improved.

have got it recording after watching you tube guide. thanks jo
repeatable crash on my atom samsung netbook that was probably what caused earlier crashes: in 'birds of io' session: set 'record audio' from 'master', 'monitor to' 'master. then in 'master' rack, attempt to 'replace module' causes crash. this happens whichever rack you both record and monitor to and then attempt to replace module. was obviously attemptin summit that doesn't/cant work cos wasn't sure how to get recording set up.
i still reckon mu lab should come set up with an audio input ready to record so that audio recording is an option without goin into modular area and setting it up. as said earlier template might be something to consider.

Yep, repeatable. It's because if you set 'Record From' and 'Monitor To' to the same module, there is a feedback loop, which is not supported.
In the next version i've added protection in order to avoid feedback loops.
It is!i still reckon mu lab should come set up with an audio input ready to record so that audio recording is an option without goin into modular area and setting it up.
Note that the video is about MuLab 3.
The principles are the same, but in MuLab 4 everything can be done via the Audio Recording Setup dialog, if you want.
And if it's about a simple recording, you can just activate the 'Record Audio' button and hit record straight after doing "New" session. Just as in M3.
Next package includes an 'Audio Recording' template. And support for 'template sessions'.as said earlier template might be something to consider.

have got it recording but still struggling to get it doing what i want.
i'm trying to set mu lab up as 4 track recorder (its free version hence only 4 tracks) with options of stereo or mono inputs on each track and monitoring on one track at a time plus the master track. can't get it to do it. sure it's easy enough but alas i'm getting monitoring on all tracks, recording on all tracks etc etc.
