If you had to choose one: DIVA or Zebra?

I actually prefer the Zebra2 interface the way it is, more or less. Of course there is room for improvement, given the insight of several years of subsequent development, but in general I find the current interface to be very clean and elegant. Don't get me wrong, I've been a Nord Modular user since the beginning (both G1 and G2), but part of Zebra's power is how much can be accomplished without chaining a ton of modules together. As was noted previously, a single Zebra oscillator module can get extremely complex!

Granted, I've only just finally started playing with the Zebra demo and bought Diva, so I don't have a long history with the project. Nevertheless, I'm very impressed, and I do agree that making a clean break with v3 would be a great opportunity.

I also prefer Zebra how it is and have no interest in a fully modular version. I find Zebra to be a great balance between modular flexibility and ease of use.

If I could ONLY choose one between Zebra and Diva, I'd have to choose Zebra, simply because of its flexibility, which is something I personally prefer and need for my type of music. Your needs/preferences may be completely different than mine.

Go with the one that suits your work/needs/preferences/creativity!

The one caveat to that is that since Diva is currently at a special intro price until January 15th, I believe, then I'd spring for Diva first since it's a great price. At $119 currently, Diva is pretty much the finest sounding VA plugin of its type on the market, IMO, and that price is a great deal.

However, and more importantly, what's even better is that you don't have to just choose one. If you are willing to pay the reasonable prices, you can have both, which is by far my preference and recommendation.

Here's what i'm dreaming of:

- Zebra "Deluxe" (or "Zebra Pro"): A special version of Zebra with all the Diva filters which can be chosen as modules. So you'll have all the filter types currently existing, XMF, VCF, FM ... and then ... DIVA!!!! So you'll have DIVA TRIPLE VCO, DIVA DUAL VCO etc... to be chosen as modules.

Price: 299,-
Upgrade from Zebra: 99,-



From an end-user POV, this would be heaven. From a marketer POV, I dunno, U-HE might be shooting it's own foot, since Zebra Pro would be competing directly with it's own Diva.

Anyway, just dreaming out loud

I'm actually thinking a bit into that direction, however in a slightly more complex and exciting way (and less expensive maybe)

Hi Urs, whether we buy Zebra or Diva will we have a special upgrade price point to any new master combination synth you come up with? That helps me to know how long to wait if I will buy one etc.

Just in case Urs doesn't respond: roughly 2 weeks ago Urs had not decided yet if Diva items for Zebra would cost extra or be free for Zebra owners.

Try both and decide yourself. Zebra can do more types of sounds well. Diva sounds more like a real analog synth, but takes more CPU in general.

For me it's exactly the opposite - I'd go with Zebra. @5Lives - you have to check them yourself.

I have both and I tend to use Zebra more (but I have Zebra HZ too and I use Diva filters). I tend to use Diva as a typical analog synth and Zebra as a synth workhorse. For me Zebra is more capable.

I don't have Diva, but if you want a synth that can cover pretty much any territory you want, I'd have to go with Zebra. It's architecture is so open ended, it's hard for me to imagine a sound I couldn't get if I was willing to out in the time, which I am. And it's a such a fun tool for discovering synthesis possibilities too.

I use DIVA the most, in all honesty. I've spent more time in Zebra making and playing with waveforms and nerdy experiments than I have making music. I should really use it more, every time I do, it yeilds interesting and irreplacable results (especially when I have a very specific synthesis setup in mind - nothing else will do). But DIVA is so musical, quite tamable on my quad core overclocked computer, and is just complex enough for someone like me to feel like they have an interesting boundary of limitations to constantly push against, allowing me to create very un-analog sounds like chiptunes, additive experiments, soundscapes and SFX, as well as doing an amazing job of analog goodness.

And for pads, it's just lush
