I'm not one who's concerned about the "rip off" or anything, but come on. Have you used Live? If you had you'd see that most details are the same, the clip matrix and scenes, the mixer layout down to the send placements, return tracks, the scrolling devices at the bottom, the effects design etc. The layout and element placement and sizes are essentially exactly the same. That's not to say that anything is the same under the hood. I would hope not all these years later with a fresh code base. But stylistically it is indeed just about the same. I think that's a great thing. Those migrating from Live will instantly feel at home. I see almost no learning curve for this software so I'm eager to try it.

That's crucial to me (says the Cubase user :hihi:).

Another interesting thing will be how the per note automation is implemented. Maybe they use the note expression VST3.5 thingy?
Otherwise it would only work with the internal instruments (At least for polyphonic material).

I was thinking that too... is there some way it could work with third party plug-ins?

I think you're on the same team as me, the ones mostly just waiting to see what it really is for ourselves before giving it a thumb up or down or speculating too much.

Meffy passed out the "BitWig Centrist" T-Shirts yesterday... didn't you get yours?

There is no such thing as a centrist

Another fork in the old continually-forking Internet debate road. :hihi:

I guess the only way would be VST Expression 2:

But that's only supported by VST3.5 plugins (Currently only Halion?).
I guess it will only work with the internal instruments. And I could imagine that Claes updates Surge to support it (He said in the other thread that some Bitwig features will be available in Surge soon).

I guess you're right... which makes it a cool long term feature but not of use in the short term with my instruments of choice... but Surge is a fine instrument and that functionality may make it worth my while to get it if I were going to use Bitwig.

However, I think it unlikely I would get Bitwig unless there is a lot that they have not shown. I saw no mention of something like Live's racks. I simply would not be without them. It is Live's racks that keep me using Live. The racks and macros are so freakin useful and easy to use! No racks, no use...

They can't include everything in version 1.0 because they may need to copy and sell more of Ableton's innovations in future version updates ;)

 Pretty much.

Remember, it's not who gets there first, it's who does it (subjectively) better. See PT's clip gain, S1's groove quantize & Reaper's track templates (which are imo, near spectacular).

Sometimes not being first has it advantages... (insert evil laugh here)...

Random Prediction: BitWig will show a demo video with 16gb of 3rd party instruments loaded at 64 samples doing most everything Live does (generally speaking), Ableton won't announce a 64-bit version at NAMM, and all hell will break loose on KVR. :)

They got there first in that case though.

Wow, looks very very promising, quite impressive. Will watch this one closely.

Curious to see how this pans out for sure. I don't care personally if Bitwig are just recycling ideas they helped come up with when they worked at Ableton. The fact that they were part of the Ableton team and decided to break away says a lot, and hopefully it's for the same reasons I've grown tired of Ableton's business model. Will be fun to see if they can release a solid Linux DAW, that could be the preferred live performance set up.

Wondering if they implement something akin to what Mainstage and Kore do with fast switching between live instrument and FX set ups with resource saving by disarming instantly the unselected tracks? This to me was/is the most glaring problem with Live as a performance DAW, it's set up more for a single VSTi or maybe two, beyond that it starts hogging resources or has to be fired in an exact order to preserve disarming FX and instruments.

I get the feeling this might be a lean and quick to implement outfit here, hopefully I'm right.

I hope you are right too... I would love for Bitwig to be so good that I switch immediately ;)

It looks interesting, but for sure it seems an absolute rip off of Live. So much so that they may have some legal issues. Its basically Live with the features added that Live users have been asking for for some time. Any video support I wonder? No video is a dealbreaker for me.

I expect Bitwig will be very affordable alternative to Live. Live Suite + M4L is a pretty pricey package, and Bitwig probably sees this as a great business opportunity. If Bitwig is launched as a cheaper, leaner, newer and more easily expandable competitor to Live, they have a winner. Affordable software is where the industry is headed. Just look at App Store or Waves new pricing strategies.

If you only someone would compete against Propellerhead. Reason seriously needs some new fresh code.

Let's cut to the chase. Which is better, bitwig or reaper?

Those that can, do. Those that can't, argue about it on k-v-r
