Sonic State has a 30m mini-podcast talking with mleghorn about his current project, recreating Holst's The Planets with synthesizers.

There's a lot of Zebra, Ace, Tyrell, and UHBIK (notably Uhbik-G) on the project.

So far he's done Mars, Mercury, and Jupiter. Nice work Mike!

...and what a thoroughly likable chap he is too!

Thanks for all the great music Mike.
Happy New Year.

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate your support!

I hope the extreme dynamism and charisma of my personality doesn't outshine the message of the interview.

OK, I'm kidding! Let's face, it was very early in the morning, I hadn't had my coffee yet, and I am definitely not a morning person. My dogs had a few words to add too.

Venus will be done in a couple weeks -- using mostly Diva. I can't wait!

Post

Bravo Mike! Can't wait for the rest of the planets to be put in orbit.

Venus is one of my favourites - with Mercury and Neptune - I consider these the more lyrical pieces compared to the ones that get the most attention but tend to be more bombastic.

Great work, Mike :) Extremely anxious to hear how you employ Diva for the task of retelling Holst's Venus. This particular synthesizer, with its warm creamy sound, should really suit these compositions IMO. Can't wait to get my ears on it.

Here's Venus: http://soundcloud.com/mike-leghorn/venus

Except for a couple Zebra sounds here and there, it's all Diva.

Mike - I am listening to Venus as I write this. I have to say I am throughly impressed. I have already listened to Mars and I liked that as well. You have done a remarkable job of capturing the feel of the pieces.

I am a big fan of Isao Tomita's version of The Planets from 1976. He was working with a much different palette of sounds at that point in time than what you have now. As a result, his take on Holst's work is much different from yours.

I am curious what you plan to do with these recordings, if anything. It is good work. Are you considering a commercial release?

Thanks for the treat. Let us know when you have more.

Like it. Slower tempo and more atmosphere than notes.
Great work!

Yes, I'm hoping to do a commercial release. For one thing, I'd like to be able to provide it in CD form so people don't have to settle for MP3s. For another thing, I'd like to get paid :-) I'm trying to get a label to take it on. They haven't said "no" yet, which I guess is good news.

Thanks for all your kind feedback on Venus. I couldn't have done it without Diva! Uranus is next (careful you how pronounce "Uranus" -- people might take it the wrong way).
