Back on to the subject which is Paul999. There was this guy on youtube who would often critique various gear. I found it somewhat bemusing as the further I tried to actually find something that this guy had ever done the less I could find and that which he claimed to have done was really really bad.

Yet he would constantly rail on everything from loops to mixers to monitors. It was all the gear's fault he sucked.

One thing is for certain though, this shit is an adventure......an expensive questionable adventure. Not sure monitors qual as part of that though. It's pretty simple...you can afford "x" you either get them or don't but ffs you DO have to have some ears/a bit a knowledge and something other than a 303 line to play on them

See, I'd never ruin the excellent standing I have with my neighbors subjecting them to my rubbish, so a decent set of cans will suffice.

Maybe someday I'll actually put something on here and there may EVEN be some that like it. Then I'll get excited and buy some monitors and throw caution to the wind.

You think that's a conspiracy? Lemme tell you something about bread. Ever since the advent of the internet and the proliferation of nutritional knowledge, people have been gravitating away from your standard cut white bread and more towards the healthy grains. Now, white bread is the de facto standard when it comes to toasters. Everyone has a toaster that can toast white bread. I decided white bread wasn't in my best interests and started to buy whole wheat bread, which is indeed baked wider. Now, I go to put my bread in the toaster, and it doesn't fit right. Either I have to scrunch it in, or nibble off the crust. Now I gotta buy a new toaster, because my bread isn't backwards compatible. But the new toaster, cooks bagel cuts. So I say, why not save some energy, and toast my french rolls and pita bread, in the toaster? I put it in, and one side of the bread is now sticking out, hence untoasted. I try to angle it in, but it fails. Now I am hand over fist with large denominated tender, looking for a thick and deep toaster, asking all the salespeople where it is. Meanwhile, my testosterone levels have decreased and my bread is not toasting correctly. Corporate bigwigs are looking through security cameras, laughing at my plight, while they sell toasters to Wonderbread kids, who think bologna is Russian for mastication. But then I realize that supply and demand is working well, as they supply a toaster that won't toast my bread, while I demand a toaster that will. As I was busy arguing with a salesperson, I saw my wife looking doe-eyed at a vegetable peeler. Do you think she is cheating on me?

I notice that the in rant about studio monitors he didn't mention referencing the mix outside the studio afterwards, so it doesn't really count. He only mentions referencing them on the HS50s he already uses (and admits he doesn't really like). And in any case, I wouldn't call HS50's a decent set of monitors to judge against anyway.

Lol I actually think they're pretty decent for the money (I'm an HS80 man myself) but the point of the big post is that 'expensive' monitors aren't worth the money, and the HS50's are far from expensive!

Not all monitors sound "crappy" ... my Genelecs sound great, and my mixes translate well to every system I try them on. My toaster takes "extra wide" slices too

The thing is not everyone listens to music on the same hifi system and not all records are recorded the same way either. So I don't follow any rules with monitors I just use my ears. On my computer desk I have a pair of near-field monitors and its clear sounding and for space and simplicity reasons too. But if I'm recording bass guitar for example I use a different speaker box as a monitor.
