Ok.

There is a new MuLab 4 pre-release package available in http://www.mutools.com/mulab/cedar

Changes since MuLab 4.0.87:
  • New MultiSampla device. Similar as in M3 but completely remade in M4 context.
  • "Create MultiSample Using Locators" has evolved into "Create MultiSample & Sequence Using Locators".
This is handy to for slicing up drum loops. Especially in combination with the new MultiSampla device.
  • Fixed: Sample context menu had double "Create MultiSample Using Locators".
  • Audio File -> "Create New Sample From Selection" now uses a popup so you can enter a name for the new sample.
  • New strategy for MIDI output modules: The MIDI Output module now has 8 event input jacks which resemble the MIDI ports. So instead of having a MIDI out module per MIDI port, you only need 1 MIDI out module and you choose the out port by making the relevant connection.
  • After doing MIDI Setup, MuLab now automatically makes sure that a session has a MIDI Output module (if relevant).
  • Fixed a problem with OSX MIDI Output.
  • When choosing a MIDI channel for a track, the "None" item has more relevant text: "Per Part" or "Parent". Similar for sequence parts.
  • New sequence function: Change MIDI Channels. Logically only available when using MIDI channels on event level.
  • More logging info when opening the MIDI engine on OSX.
  • Note Editor: "Choose Focussed MIDI Channel" menu option is available as soon as you're using MIDI channels on event level. (which is a more relaxed condition as before)
  • Finetuned ordering in the Session context menu.
  • Fixed: Envelope points that were positioned at the right editor border were not visible.
  • Tuned: Envelope Editor: When mouse cursor is on point, mouse cursor becomes pointing hand.
  • Finetuned auto-naming of patches etc.
  • Control + click on timebar creates new locator without repositioning the play cursor.
  • "Manage Audio/Sample Files" moved in group with the other 'managers'.
  • When changing the color of a group frame in a customized MUX Play Editor, then any transparant objects above are immediately redrawn too.
  • Further finetuned the auto-vst-naming algo: added the word "prog" to the filter.
  • Fixed an issue when tracks had no target.
  • Super Modulators start playing on patch load, even when no notes are received. This was needed for effect patches.
  • Factory "New.Musession" reverted to a more empty session.
  • Droppping a MuSession file onto a session window opens that session.
  • ADSR envelope has an extra parameter: Global Level. Handy to simplify patch design e.g. a pitch adsr envelope now doesn't need a modulation mapper anymore to implement 'pitch env depth'.
  • Session -> Mixdown Audio: When mixing down to a sample, there could be a crash in certain situations.
  • Session -> Mixdown Audio: When auto-creating a new part with the mixdown result, the new track was not automatically targetting the relevant target module.
  • Finetuned the use of relative links to sample files: 1) App Library 2) Session file 3) User Library
  • New preference "StandardCopyPartIsSharedCopy". If set to 1 then [Ctrl]+drag = copy as shared part, [Shift]+[Ctrl]+drag = copy as unique part i.e. reversed standard behaviour.
  • Finetuned graphics.
  • MuLab Free and XT are limited to 1 MIDI channel per track.
  • New way for differentiating MuLab Free / XT / UL: You can use as many tracks and MIDI channels as you want in all 3 versions, but if you exceed the bounds of your user license, an alert voice regularly says "Please upgrade your MuLab".
  • When you crossed the bounds of your MuLab User License, then the MuLab web shop opens on quit.

What's changed since M4.0.95:
  • New: ADSRs can now be uni- and bi-polar. Switchable via the context menu.
  • New: Dropping a session onto the Open Session startup dialog opens that session.
  • New: Support for waveform sub-folders.
  • Tuned: Deleting an envelope point via context menu doesn't popup a confirmation alert anymore.
  • Tuned: "Merge Selected Sequence Parts" now also in part context menu.
  • Tuned: When stepping thru patches/samples/waveforms/... then at the end of the library, an auto-hide alert informs you about the end.
  • Tuned: Finetuned behaviour when closing the last session window.
  • Tuned: Track header area goes a little deeper, also taking the previously unused space.
  • Tuned: Finetuned auto-focus module behaviour when activating editor windows: Now even when activating any synth sub-module editor window, the synth (rack) is focused!
  • Tuned: MUX Play Editor: "Add Label Component" renamed to "Add Group Frame".
  • Tuned: "Reset Music Processing" function renamed back to the more compliant "Panic".
  • Tuned: Functions named "Add New X" are now simply named "Add X".
  • Tuned: Finetuned several aspects wrt creating new locators in composer, audio editor etc.
  • Tuned: Focussed Module Panel also accepts dropped modules/parameters on the keyboard.
  • Tuned: "Duplicate Sequence" function renamed to "Make Unique Sequence".
  • Tuned: Envelope parts: removed redundant "Rename" function from context menu.
  • Tuned: MuSynth and MultiSampla amp envelopes are now unipolar.
  • Tuned: Sometimes there were 'AutoSaved' sessions left in the mulab folder after quit.
  • Tuned: Finetuned several aspects in the factory library.
  • Tuned: Finetuned several UI & graphic aspects.
  • Fixed: "Upgrade Sessions" back in play.
  • Fixed: OSX: Audio Setup dialog: Fixed a little graphical mismatch.
  • Fixed: When changing the length of a part/note/zone/... the lasso box had some graphical artifacts.
  • Fixed: Composer: Fixed a problem when dragging parts while there are folded sub-tracks.
  • Fixed: When editing an audio file in an external editor, then after finishing editing, the audio part wasn't redrawn.
  • Fixed: Fixed a serious system-wide bug that could cause crashes in certain situations. In fact this bug was also in M3, but chances that it actually occured were lower.
  • Fixed: New audio and instrument tracks got "Per Part" MIDI channels by default, which was not ideal for MuLab Free.
  • Fixed: Dropping a .Mux onto the Mux Editor top header didn't work anymore.

I have a question: When you close the last session window, and so MuLab becomes invisible as there are no windows anymore, then MuLab shows a little dialog where you can open a session or quit.

Now question is: What's the most user friendly behaviour when closing the last window?

Would it be better that MuLab simply quits in silence when closing the last session window? Or would that be weird/unexpected behaviour?

Curious for your opinions!

definitely prefer no dialog for me :-)

+1, I actually find that dialog unexpected.

Post

GIMP does the same thing, so it's not unprecedented behaviour. (In fact, GIMP leaves most of itself on display when you close the last image you're editing - MULAB is much tidier.)

...but it's not the most common way of behaving. Unlike GIMP, it also doesn't take very long to start MULAB again, so there's not so much benefit in keeping a "stub" of the application open. Maybe have a "Quit now and never ask me this again" button as one of the options..? Or is that just bloat?

Post

The problem is that when we have several sessions open and you begin to close them you may close the last one by accident and quit, not knowing it was the last session open. So the dialog in this case helps....
I work on variations and keep many sessions open. Maybe I should pay more attention then

what about the option to have on or off?

Post

After rethinking I think liquidsound has a point. I yet have to work with multiple sessions at a time, that's why I find that extra dialog strange.
Anyway there's the "Quit" item in the MULAB menu to close all sessions and quit the program immediately.

Post

Meanwhile, after a nice M4 evening jam, got this idea: Instead of doing the dialog on closing the last session, what about this:

Currently, when you close a session you get:

Save before close - Close without Save - Cancel.

This wil stay the same for closing all sessions until the last session, then you get Save before quit - Quit without Save - Cancel. (as in M3)

So if you just work single session, you'll get the same behaviour as in M3.

Doing it this way is also 1 dialog less. And maybe more natural.

What do you think?

Post

My gut instinct (without trying it - I tend to work on single session projects) is that the inconsistency might be as surprising as the extra dialog...

Post

Another inconsistency is that when MuLab rarely crashes it saves your work!!!
Not found anywhere! :troll:
I whish Live could do that.

I happen to like the "Last Chance" dialog. Sometime makes me go back again for another round.
