are osc presets, actual 'presets'?

ive realized that its difficult or next to impossible to get the kind of oscs as done in the osc presets. since they are essentially computer designed.
im making a patch bank, and want to know if osc presets are presets in themselves? are they protected by copyright in case a person want to do a third party or commercial bank.

If you're making a bank (free or commercial) and you're planning on using oscillator presets it's probably best to try and contact the original author(s) for permission. It's always better to get these issues sorted out early before they potentially become a big headache.
Some sets like the waves that Howard made for the factory install I would consider safe for use. Patches on the PatchLib are a different story...

no way am i gonna use or tweak another person patches. i make all my own sounds always. but an osc preset is essentially a computer designed/extracted wavform that is not even a wavfrom in itself. i have no problem making my own oscs, but the capabilities of the synth become so much more powerful when using osc presets because you can get sounds that would otherwise be impossible to get by hand. and would need to be mathematically created. i don't care really besides knowing whether it ok. if its not, no big deal. ill roll my own.bmrzycki wrote:If you're making a bank (free or commercial) and you're planning on using oscillator presets it's probably best to try and contact the original author(s) for permission. also, maybe im missing something, and you don't need to use osc presets and can in fact draw any wav in that case, using osc presets would defeat the whole purpose/process of being creative. im just under the impression that osc presets cant be done by hand which would duplicate the exact/mathematical wav they can be done by using software.

To my knowledge the osc presets in Zebra are just waveforms that are manually drawn (the first and last waveform) in the wavetable and then the osc scans through the morphing wavetable, creating a waveset.
So at the base are manually drawn waveforms. I don't know about copyright on those, but I guess it's ok to use them as any other synth with waveforms/wavetables.

No band limits, aliasing is the noise of freedom!

i don't know this for sure but i heard an osc preset is created with software. like wav2Zebra and blueberry thing? says that in the documentation.

Sounds like you're checking out stuff from the PatchLib, there are some really amazing things in there. Do you mean about some of the waveforms that look like they would be quite a project to manually enter? I often wonder the same thing
example: (2 Leaders) HS Klezmatron's 'Phatty Waves'
Generally Zebra's oscillators are IMHO a sweet spot between basic waveforms and sampling. They don't have the resolution of samples but they can capture a lot of the musical and tonal details, while still staying in a format that's open to the vast world of OSC FX. It's like reducing a sample to just the essential spectral properties. There are all kinds of things that one might originally try to do via filtering, or playing a chord, FM, waveshaping, all sorts of things, that can be done just with oscillator shapes.

exactly. some of them are impossible to emulate without mathematical computation. im surprised nobody has brought this up before?xh3rv wrote:Sounds like you're checking out stuff from the PatchLib, there are some really amazing things in there. That is incorrect. OSC tables that are hand-drawn can be saved within Zebra. I would say the majority of osc presets on the patchlib were made by hand, not with tools like wav2zebra and blueberry thing.AstralExistence wrote:i don't know this for sure but i heard an osc preset is created with software. like wav2Zebra and blueberry thing? says that in the documentation.

oh, that's good to know. that mean i can do the same. it was more a technology question then using presets. i hate using presets. but im still curious what urs has to say about this.bmrzycki wrote:That is incorrect. FYI, from the Zebra2 manual:
Oscillator Module Preset
This button is for loading / saving complete oscillator templates. Left-click to select a preset from a small browser window. Right-click to open a drop-down menu instead. To store the oscillator, select save oscillator settings from this menu.

When doing your own sounds. It's good to start with your own initialize patch and "rolling your own" as ya said, but "hating" presets is not good imo.AstralExistence wrote:i hate using presets.
Listening and examining others presets for inspiration, learning, and ideas is something I do a lot. To appreciate the sounds others do, and learn from them, is not a bad thing imo. Certainly nothing to be hated.
Good luck with your soundset.
btw: I believe I have "hand drawn" the most osc wave sets done so far.
They are free to use in any commercial or non-commercial project.

I actualy created quite a few OSC presets with blueberrything from analog recordings..
