It seems that for MDrummer to be in sync in Reaper, I have to start playback from the beginning of a command. I can't just put the cursor anywhere, press play, and expect MDrummer to be in sync. Is that just how it is? Is there some setting I'm missing?

Post

Kind of true. Drummer is always in sync with the host's tempo, but if you start commands in some weird places, it may temporarily use that position, because it has no other information to find out.
If you think something is wrong, please send me a project.

Just to clarify, my commands do start on bar lines (snapped), but I'm talking about starting play from any (weird) point.
But, hey, I just set 'perfect sync' in additional rhythm properties and now it all syncs regardless!
I notice in your description of 'perfect sync' that you recommend disabling this setting, but I'm not sure what you mean in your explanation?

Ok, in that case I think it can be a problem of the host - if you use long notes (I recommend very short ones) and start playback from the middle of the note, the host can start the note right away without specifying "where it actually started". In that case it basically misleads MDrummer. What host are you using then?

I'm using Reaper. Yes, that's it, starting playback from the middle of the note causes the out of sync (and it stays out of sync as the song keeps playing). And yes, if I make the commands very short, then start playback from a blank area between notes, sure, MDrummer picks up in sync at the next command, but I still have the problem if say I am rewinding and just happen to land somewhere on that (small) command.
But as I said, enabling 'perfect sync' in 'additional rhythm properties' in MDrummer solves this problem: I can start playback anywhere along the command note, and MDrummer will pickup sync almost immediately. I say 'almost', because, say I have a bass drum on beats 1 and 3, then start playback on 2, MD will immediately play the beat 1 hit then get back in sync with the beat 3 hit. I can understand this, and it's not a problem. But still wondering why you recommend not enabling perfect sync? In the help popup (additional rhythm properties) your syntax is a bit ambiguous.

Hmmm, well, if I'd remember why is that default :D.
This sync system is actually a real pain, 'cos almost every host makes something weird. I think the perfect sync may be a problem, if you'd change signature in the middle of the song, but I'm not sure.
