what's wrong with watermarking?

Is leaves a stain... :hihi: Seriously though, nothing, unless you're someone who leaks software to hackers... which is where G2 got it's malware. It was a cracked/hacked version that had been tampered with (AiR hack iirc) that started these BS "phone home" / malware rumors... it's pathetic really.

thats my view as well, but they may be a legitimate reason I have overlooked about watermarking...I have several products I have licensed that are watermarked including tone 2 and a few others and I have no problems with them protecting their software by doing so.....was just curious if there is a legitimate reason for being anti watermarking..

Heard Filterbank3 and it's great, it would be nice to have it. :)

Wrong, and wrong again. Not rumor, truth.

The fact that you're calling it a rumor is akin to calling me a liar, and this is not a lie.

I downloaded my copy straight from Tone2 and couldn't get it working. No "AiR hack." The "add software to your firewall's white list" solution came straight from Tone2 support.

Now, I'll say again, that I don't think there's anything really amoral about this except for the fact that it's done without the user's knowledge. If it just used a simple c/r authorization I wouldn't have had the problem.

The rumor is that calling home doesn't happen. My firewall caught it in the act. Notice how no one from Tone2 denies this? So... I own Gladiator 2, one of the expansions and Warmverb. I love them both. They're not buggy and sound fantastic. However... as a company Tone2 seems to be a bit less than honest with it's declaration of software protection methods. If my work was being passed around the internet willy-nilly I'd probably be pretty angry too, but I don't think this is an excuse to not disclose your protection methods from your customers. Look at developers like U-He. He seems to be able to keep selling software without resorting to less than transparent methods.

So I'm sure if my name would come up in this contest Tone2 will toss it out and pick the next one, but I think it's important to put the truth out there.

Edit: for fun, here is an actual quote from the developer. It was Warmverb that the problem was with, so my memory was a bit dim there...

It doesn't happen with our other products and so far only a couple of our customers reported a Warmverb-firewall incompatibility, requiring a small change in the firewall's configuration.

Nevertheless, I'm sorry to hear about the problems you ran into, we try to make use of our software as smooth as possible but sometimes these incompatibilities happen. We'll take care of it in the next Warmverb release.
That's nice and all, but why is it accessing the outside world at all without our permission? It really bums me out. I'm pro anti-piracy but at what point does the protection justify the end result?

Oh, don't take it so personally. I'm merely conveying my experience with T2 software (and the tests I did), and what I remember about what happened back then.

Do you see what you're doing though? By saying "it didn't effect me so it didn't happen" you're basically smoke-screening the actual truth. Why comment at all if you don't know for sure what happened?

... so, I'm smoke-screening cause I didn't have the issues you had? Seriously?

Awesome a new synth!

A retro-styled synth from Tone2? That's unexpected, but cool, I'm curious about it. I know Markus has a lot of experience with real analog gear. :)
noise and beats: Negutyv Xeiro do people actually click these?
gearlust: Roland JP-8000, too much/not enough eurorack
machinecode by: u-he, Bitwig, Fabfilter, NI, et al

+1.. Tone 2 synths are awesome.
T2 Icarus is a must. SonicCore SCOPE is the most. As heart of studio it has my vote, cause XITE-1 is all she wrote.
