Hi Everyone,

I've recently tried to create a patch for Van Halen's "Jump" to see if I could. (no other reason)

Love or hate the song, the patch is well known:

However, I'm finding it harder to recreate in Zebra than I anticipated.

There is this "zip" in the attack that I can't get no matter how I shape the envelope to drive a filter.

Is this a difficult patch? or am I just feeble? or both

Er.. just guesses here but maybe try adding a little env. mod to the res as well or perhaps a barely perceptible pitch mod on the oscillators ?

Did you lower the sustain level of the amp envelope? A lot of these punchy sounds are just the sound of a quick decay leading into a lower sustain stage, which are often overlooked with the sustain left at maximum. Also, as already stated, tiny pitch 'jumps'

in the attack can really go a long way to make a sound "whack into the ears" more.

Or, it could be that Zebra's simply having an allergic reaction to this sound and doesn't want to make it

@Sendy, good advice. I found that as well by experimenting, and TBH thats pretty much what I've learned so far.

Also I should post some files, just in case...

It's actually a very simple patch, but to me it just doesn't "zip".
Maybe it's an effect in the mix, or I need to detune it more.

I should also say, that I don't care for Jump as a song.
But I do like this VH tune though:

Probably the most famous synth sound ever made.
I was always interested about this and now, thanks for you, i'm finally made it.

I already had a patch for my D-50, what i was using instead of a real Oberheim.
Then i made 1 for Zebra, (Jump Over Zebra)-i was just listening the original sample music.

Then i'v got the real one: Jump-Pure OBX. Found a good fx too, a hipassed delay -
i know it's not in the original, but it's for more fun. Thanks for you 3ee about the send fx idea. Your 3.osc with the octave down was misleading me first, but i love your preset, and you gave us enough choice to turn on or off modules.

It's become a mini retro
soundset. All of this presets are there, a remake of Michael Cavallo lovely Choir, -(Hope he don't mind, he always inspiring me with those Fairlight type wavesets)
plus some more nice stuff fitting to this age.

I am always happy to get some free presets, thanks to the community there is plenty of really useful and great presets for free. Like your winter set 3ee!

It's my turn to give back something to you guys! I hope you enjoy these presets and find them useful.

Looks like we made a little Jump Contest here, I would be very happy if Howard and all others would Jump in with his Jump Preset.

Thank you for starting the thread & posting the patch (I think it's a good start)! Here is what I did to your patch to make it sound better (to my ears): For OSC1: DROP Tune down to -12.00 (at least that's what works for me & my 5 octave keyboard). Increase VCF1 cutoff to 103.0. Add Delay 1 after ModFX1: Feedback= 0.0, X-back = 0.0, lowpass = 100.0, Hipass=0, 1/4 Sync1: Ratio1=100.0, Pan1= -100.0; 1/8Sync2: Ratio2 = 100.00, Pan2 = 56.0; 1/16Sync3: Ratio3=100.00, Pan = -44.0; 1/4Sync4: Ratio4 = 100.0, Pan4 = 36.00, Mix = 16.5. Then last, add Rev1: Dry = 85, Wet = 30, PreDelay = 10, Range = 50, Feedback = 50, Damp = 27.9, Speed = 50, Modulation = 50, D-Range = D-Feedback = 50, D-Mix = 80, D-Speed = 100, D-mod = 50. I'm not saying it's perfect, but it's the best I have played using any synth (better than Arturia's Oberheim SEM "Jump" factory patch(es) in my opinion). If someone can do better, I'd like to try the settings.

Your fx setup is perfect Aaron, and we get a nice punchy modern preset, but with
Gino quad, deeply detuned osc the sound is very thin.

To comper with the OBX full mid and low range. This was my biggest surprise too:
I was listening the OP-X Van Halen Jump preset, and there was very slow detuning and
pitch animation but the sound was still incredible strong and clear.

I thought i can never make it on Zebra, but then when i began to use 2 single osc (instead of dual, quad or even eleven,) with very slow lfo and MSEG tuning it become more and more alike, but still it was thin and powerless.

Then i had to use the vintage2 filter + a shaper to get that
thick sound.
So sometimes less is more. I just put some other nice fx - not like the original, just for fun.
I alrady was happy with the body of the sound itself and
for the fact that we can make it on ZEBRA!

Way off topic but the most famous "synth" (well, computer generated) sound is actually the THX sound

At least I read somewhere that it's the most heard synthetic sound.

Wow! This is great, thanks for all the help and contributions.

@3ee, I like your patch, and thanks for posting. I was playing around with it, and I found that using dual on osc1 and osc2 with some detuning added a bit more width. But it's a slippery slope, because it takes away from the other aspects that you captured.

@hollo, I really like the jump pure OBx patch, that is getting very close.

The interesting bit is that just stacking up lots of detuned saws does not get you the sound, even if you get the envelop right.

What would be cool is to get a recording of a single note from the original patch (one that we agree has the sound we're trying to get). Then we can break down the harmonics with something like freakoscope and see how close we can really get.
