I have spent a lot of time with Cubase6 lately. The workflow drives me nuts but it is heck of a powerful DAW, especially for advanced midi editing. But that's another discussion...

If your looking for an all-rounder workstation type synth - forget it.

Many a folk make the erroneuos assumption that it's "Workstation" with every sound you'll ever need.....Sometimes, when looking for a particular sound, I feel like it's every sound I'll never need....but, some great Omni stuff has made it into my music and I'm keeping it :D

Post

I hate watching EP vids because he's just TOO F'N GOOD!

The browser in Omni in not good, the sample library is full of useless sounds like multisampled supersaws, the synth section is OK, but not too great. It does not have nice selection of sampled instruments - Kontakt is better for orchestral or band sounds etc. There are some nice guitars and presets for cinematic soundtracks. It will be good synth without the sample library - but out there you can find better synths and better romplers. It is good - but not the best. And it is overhyped.

Ok, so since I started this:

"yeah, go get it" + a few

started watching vids on it, and thinking......oh yeah, that could be a big improvement...

Then two thumbs down

I don't know about 'overhyped' I think that is a matter of taste and depends a lot on what else you may own and if you will do your own tweaking. I personally love the arp in Trilian, being able to groove lock everything is really cool, and to play 4 instruments with different (but locked) arps at the same time is really great for me, I actually bought Trilian based on the arp to a large degree :) My only issue with Trilian is that I want more timbres so to me Omnisphere is like a sonic expansion for Trilian :) lets me mix in organs, guitars, sitars etc. and I personally really like the synth. Not because of the hype but because it suits me.

What I'm discovering is you can start from scratch like synth "a".

The thing is, is looks like options are more complex, but not necessarily "complicated"

@workstation: Not really seeing myself thinking of it that way. I'd never think of replacing kontakt and not using my cinematique stuff or audiothng stuff (or my beloved Kawai piano.......no way I'm going UVI/ilok though :x )

I crave moving stuff, Iris's shortcomings in this area really have me thinking about this. Trilian actually does a bit of this and it's inspiring. I find massive and the like kinda "samey" sounding at times.

Plus, every example I hear of omni sounds fantastic. No, I'm most certainly not going to use EVERYTHING but for the big sounds it just seems well........BIG!

I dunno, I might get it and be underwhelmed......but that's why I started this thread :)

Post

I have it and I love it, but I only go to it for certain types of sounds which it does very, very well. I see it as a package that I use for pads, soundscapes, evolving textures, interesting takes on classic sounds that nothing else really touches.

It does do the standard synth thing very well, but that's not really its purpose imo.

If you were considering a purchase i'd suggest deciding what it is you were looking for first. If it's another synth to tweak then it's probably a waste of money as others do it equally as well.

If it's another instrument that'll provide you with almost limitless supplies of inspirational (important that last bit) sounds then nothing else touches it, and I do mean nothing.

At 400usd shipped w/6 mon no interest.......it's a done deal.

@tehlord: That is pretty much exactly what I'm looking for. The synths I have are going nowhere (I'm working on learning massive better as we speak) but I want that lush soundcasape with the evolving patterns.

Sucks ordering in on a weekend. No worries, I have plenty to keep me occupied until then. And the instructional vids are fab!

Ok well there's nothing close to Omni for lush soundscapes. I have Absynth, Alchemy (player with a load of expansions) as well and although they're good, Omni is just better.

This is all Omni apart from the strings which are Alchemy, and the vocals which are half my misses and half samples from Total India

Did you check the re-sale policy? (Because as you wrote, it's A LOT of money for a synth that may be gone forever if you cannot resell it in case you don't like it. Just asking because I read some complaints about this here at KVR, and there are indeed not much sales of this synth in the market place.)

I think Omnisphere is a very good sounding workstation, sort of "magic box" if you are playing around with it. Also the new "Orb" feature is quite nice . But i would also consider NI Komplete 8, which is more expensive but you'll get a huge collection of plugs , Kontakt alone would rival Omnisphere and things like Reaktor or battery 3 are plugs that omnisphere doesnt offer , so you have to buy additional plugs if you want that. There was a great combination with Kore2 controller last time , too bad i didnt caught the deal ...
