Yeah very strange, to be honest, I'm more inclined to think it's a problem with PT 8. I have found it to be quite buggy and unreliable at times. If I can't get it going, I may just ditch PT all together and switch to logic.
I'll wait to hear what advice Palec has first though.

As a workaround for this strange problem, check Ignore Errors During Playback/Record in Setup > Playback Engine.

I have a question on those with this problem. How many Host Processors you have activated in Setup > Playback Engine?
The problem seems to be related to this one and only if the number of processors is set to maximum. One processor less seems as a fix without checking "Ignore Errors During Playback/Record"
