Is it possible to record a 'direct' audio signal into an Android smartphone?

This is probably only of interest to people who incorporate samples into their productions. And then again, the potential of the subject coupd stretch to recording vocals in your studio microphone 'directly' onto your Android phone.

I own a Samsung Galaxy S2 and at this point several GREAT music creation apps exist for it: Caustic 2, SunVox, TapeMachine and Su-Preme MPA. There are around 8 more apps in this level of quality but the four aforementioned are the most useable production apps for my needs.

I utilize samples from vinyl records extensively in my muaical works, and though you can get surpricingly good results from experimenting with recording a loudspeaker with your smartphone's front or back mic, I still really miss a way to record audio 'directly' into the Android via a digital signal path - or digital/analog. As long as its the original signal beinf transfered through phono cable, wifi or USB cable. Which means no fuzzy 3rd generation recording-sampling :-)

Here are some suggestions:

- a turntable playing connected to a PC with a server program installed that sends the recorded signal to a client app on the Android phone via wi-fi (or maybe bluetooth). Of course this method ought to be fully functionally by using only Android client app (which hasrecord button, etc. - would be cool to see integrated into TapeMachine or Audio Evolution which are the only two REALLY serious audio editors) and the turntable itself (putting on the needle basically). The PC server program should only be a gateway. This would of course require user to setup the server, but this only has to be done once. Would this be a realistic solution?

- even more direct: a USB turntable connected directly to the micro USB port of the smartphone. Is this currently possible?

- in relation to the first suggestion, TapeMachine 2 has recently been released and one of the news was the ability to record I put from bluetooth devices. So I'm wondering if such a thing as bluetooth CD players (or even bluetooth turntables) exist? Then, theorethically, TM should be able to record their input. But has anyone seen such devices? Or better yet, has anyone tried this? Also if TM can record the signal from bluetooth devices now, then it shouldn't be too hard for a programmer to make a server program for PC (with bluetooth) that can send audio signal to Android phone?

Is any of this feasible or realistic? Other ideas?

Thanks in advance for a constructive discussion and exchange of ideas.

You just need a cable to input a signal. If you look at the headphone/mic cable that you use, its just one of those. The input on cell phones is mic level and mono only. You can change the mic level to line level with potential divider. This should work :

Other Android devices such as tablets may have line level stereo inputs

???????

If your recording from a turntable then why do you feel the need to do this via bluetooth??? Surely just running a jack lead from amp to phone should let you record the audio somehow unless Android is really f**ked up.

Every phone I've owned for the past 8 years has been 'handsfree' meaning you plugged supplied headphones and a mic into it. I maybe wrongly assumed you could just record down the same connector using a different cable.

Also you mentioned having the pc stream audio from turntable to phone when the pc could do the sampling and editing and then transfer (with the cable that come with the phone) the samples as a batch.

Maybe one of the Wi-Drive solutions available would sort of do what you wanted - have your pc 'save' the samples you record on the pc to the Wi-Drive then transfer the samples you want to the phone.

This one says iOS devices but I'm sure I've seen others which say Android too - I think it would probably work with any wifi device but check 1st.

USB turntables do exist but if it needs drivers to work then it would most likely need an Android driver - iOS usb devices only work if the device is class compliant, Android might be the same.
No, that Glitch is meant to be there.....

Its a nice idea but lets see who could come up with this new application. I think this app will be liked by all.

Big surprise of last year for me was that the old ipods output video through the sound plug on the 3rd? ring. Amazing stuff. Dell laptops only have like one plug and you choose if it's audio in or audio out!

The only way to get a professional latency free recording now is to to use Audio Evolution Mobile with their USB audio recorder. Which means of course that you would have to get a USB soundcard and a USB-OTG cable.
But then you would have excellent sound.
n-Track studio say that they will implement the same idea for their Android application to.
