Dongle or no dongle, that's the question!

Just want to throw the question "Don't professional users buy it anyway?" in the room. I mean usually it's amateurs who never do a buck with their music who use warezed software, isn't it? I know there had been reports about famous artists using warezed synth plugins, but then, i don't think there's really many of those...

And absolutely guarantees the loss of a certain number of customers. I for one will never purchase a product that requires a Dongle and I believe we've seen others in this thread express the same. Can Dongles absolutely guarantee that someone will purchase the product just because they can't get a cracked version?ttoz wrote:they would be likely to choose to continue using it, since it protects their property to a decent degree.
Just to deflect the usual responses: Anti Dongle does not mean Pro Warez. I'm just as much against piracy as anyone who's got a handful of Dongles shoved up their.......port.
Anyway these threads always get locked so........IBTL........

I wonder if any research into that exists.chk071 wrote:Just want to throw the question "Don't professional users buy it anyway?" in the room. How would one know?
My-hunch-assumption-intuition tells me.
There is no difference. The professionals, and amateurs, are both using them equally, in comparison to those who buy.

Definitely. I'm not in any way against developers protecting their business. Just I don't like a hardware piece that if it breaks or is stolen I'm screwed out of my investment. It is a case of 'all eggs in one basket' to me and I just don't like the whole idea.Teksonik wrote:Anti Dongle does not mean Pro Warez.
Spectrasonics mentions that if they ever go out of business they will make sure there is a system in place to allow users to easily register their products. I think this sort of assurance from developers makes C/R perfectly reasonable for me. Maybe someone can explain the downside of that sort of system (systems that don't ever go online? this isn't the case with me). I personlly like simple serials, or in the case of my nice new Memorymoon synths, no copy protection at all, just access to the product once I've paid. I liked that (and the synths) so much I bought all three available. I know that probably wouldn't work or most developers but I very much appreciated it. I just need to keep the archives backed up.

If dongles are so great, why are so many companies moving away from them? I have my marshmallows ready

Or someone was on KVR and bought into all the bitching about them.Resonator63 wrote:Could it be because they were losing saleshibidy wrote:I got a lighter and some lighter fluid..............

I bought profools way back when. It came with a dongle. Back in those days there was no denying that companies like waves, mcdsp, URS were killer products. Now, I don't touch my dongle anymore. It never cries out to me "hibidy, please use me"

I'm dongleless too.
At least that means we can't argue about whose dongle is biggest
Though of course mine was much bigger than yours

I have the one I need for Cubase, but i'd not bother with another.
To be honest they should all be compatible with each other, so that instead of 3 dongles , you could run all the licenses off just one. Instead of needing more.

I'm all for dongles. Easy to transport between computers, and the appear to protect the developer from pirating.
I just don't get what all the fuss is about.

It's possible you missed reading my posts in the beginning of the thread.4lb Kitty wrote:I'm all for dongles. Easy to transport between computers, and the appear to protect the developer from pirating.

The fuss is called a legit reason in this case.

I read your posts.
I can see the problem on some laptops, but desktops nowadays have so many USB ports (mine has ten on the back alone, plus four on the front) that it doesn't really matter.
I'd also have to challenge companies like Wacom in that the ports on your computer are all replicated through an internal hub, so in essence, ALL Wacoms are plugged into hubs.
I will say that eLicenser does say that the results using a hub are not guaranteed, and Cubase wouldn't load for me when I had my dongle connected to my hub, but it's also a very, very cheap hub (10 ports for $12).
