Hi,
Just following from Oplitude's idea about 'visualising song structures' below, how do you all regard Tracktion as far as arranging a complete song?
I find Tracktion excellent for developing individual parts and sections, but I think it starts to lose its intuitive/speedy edge when it comes to building big arrangements, with 70/80 tracks and maybe 7/8 different sections.
And, so as not to be negative about it, what do you think could be done to improve it as an arranging tool? I don't really know what to suggest as I have not yet come across any music programme which has really solved this - and for me arranging is always the biggest barrier to actually completing tracks.

I find it great for complex arrangements including orchestral work. It's really great that I can overlay midi and audio tracks so that I have fewer lanes, though folder tracks would help hugely.
I had the idea recently that there should be a viewing mode that's like a fisheye lens - the centre of the arrange window would be enlarged, so that you're aware of the bigger picture and detail at once. Just a thought; much too complex I guess.

The are issues such as lack of ghost midi clips and automation not dragging with clips etc., that do cause some headaches.

I was thinking it would be great if we could group clips, much in the same way you can group and ugroup structures in a vector drawing program (or PowerPoint for that matter). That way, I could select all the clips that make up a verse (probably a square block, but maybe not on all tracks and maybe a more irregular "shape" of clips), say, copy or move them about, etc.

"1:the locators in ACID are linked by a horizontal bar across the top (got a screenshot, but no webspace...). This is good because it makes it really obvious what is inside the locators and what is outside.
2:how about being able to click on this bar to activate or deactivate those locators. So, you could in theory have locators around each separate part of your song (if you wanted to) and just try out different song structures by activating/deactivating the different locators.
3:as well as clicking on them to activate/deactivate, you could set how many times you would like each section to loop (if at all)
A bit like a VERY visual playlist, I suppose"

Unfortunately it's not a feature I could throw together quickly because there'd be a lot of code to change, but one day I'd really like to try to come up with a good solution to this. I reckon there with a few cunning adjustments, it could end up being able to do most of the things Ableton Live can do."

New toggle button identified as "jump" to be located near "loop" and "punch"
When toggled off - everything functions as it currently does.
When toggled on -
* loop, punch and recording are disabled
* little icon located beside the toggle becomes visible
If you click on the icon you get a new collection of jump options in the edit panel
The first is a large text field which only accepts #'s. It is here that you set the order of sections to be played.
The sequence position shows the current play position in relation to the current and highlighted section.
The entire edit position shows the current play position in relation to the entire edit
You can save and open arrangements (simply the series of numbers)
Selected tracks or all tracks can be rendered as determined by the current order of sections.
A new edit can be created as determined by current order of sections. This would allow the user to then close the current edit open the new edit in order to make chages such as recording additional tracks (remember recording is turned off in jump mode).
What do you think fellows?
