Hi all,
I read a lot of on this issue of acoustics but still have several questions unanswered or which I am not 100% sure I understand (and I don't want to miss out anything on such an important part of the studio preparation)

After reading and getting information from very nice people, I am considering building Bass traps, early reflections+sides absorbing panels and diffusers by myself :)
Obviously I must make sure that i understand it enough to build an effective setup.

The comparison is between Acoustic foam (wedges) such as Auralex VS flat Rigid Fiberglass (703/705):

Early reflections panels:
1. Which one gives better result overall?
2. Does the wedges play a vital role?
3. Should the panel/foam be 2" or 4"?

Absorbers panels on the sides and back walls:
4. Which one gives better result overall?
5. Does the wedges play a vital role?
6. Should the panel/foam be 2" or 4"?

Bass traps (will definitely build Rigid Fiberglass BT):
7. People keep talking about 6" (3x2" boards) but is bigger better? i.e. 12" would do a better job? (I have a large room so np's)

Diffuser:
8. How many diffusers do you recommend to use in a standard room setup? GIK layout show as many as 20 overall...

9. DIY wood diffuser would give better results than Auralex T-fusor/Q-fusor?

10. Is it ok to build wooden stands for all the panels (same as GIK) instead of mounting them on the walls?

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!

Hi mate,

take a look at the reply i made here :

http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=351780

The Left and Right reflection point panels are 4'' thick, i bought them from GIK acoustics, but they cost me like £300 for 4 when VAT and delivery and everything was included, i would say go for 4'' because even though they are covering your reflection points they are still going down to low frequencies because of the material you have made them from,

I would always say fibre glass over auralex now purely on the fact that i have put up 4 panels and 2 bass traps and my room sounds awesome! I have heard that auralex are ok on mid/ high frequencies though so its up to you which one you go for on them, i just think that DIY panels will help more with bass trapping,

I haven't got a diffuser yet, I'm going to buy them but there like £300 for 2 where I'm getting mine from (can't be arsed to build my own) so I'm going to have to wait,

One thing i would advise, before you go putting stuff up, maybe do a room analysis check with REW software, on the 2nd picture i uploaded on that reply i linked you to i am doing it there, you need to put a microphone in your mix position and record a sine wave sweeping from 20hz to 20khz (the software does that for you) - this gives you a clear sign of what is wrong with your room and so you know what to treat, unfortunately i don't know how to read the analysis, so a guy is doing mine for me, but it should definitely help

Hope this helps

Mike
Anybody can do anything if they set their mind to it

Ok,
After doing some more research (but no sleep :) i've found prepared panels made from Glasswool in my area which are already individually covered in fabric and ready to be installed.
These plates are only 25/50mm thick so I wanted to know if I use more plates together, let's say 4 of them which will be 20cm (7.87"), will it increase the NRC?
Also, the fact that each plate is covered with fabric changes anything or it's the same as if I took naked plates and covered them with a single sheet of fabric?

(Mm). Sound Absorption Coeffcient at.
HZ
mm 125. 250. 500. 1000. 2000. 4000. NRC
25 25 0.07. 0.34. 0.66. 0.90. 0.86. 0.74. 0.69.
50 50 0.23. 0.23. 1.15. 1.05. 0.93. 0.91. 0.98.

Thx!
