after thinking for a while i can see the point why some people do recommend a hardware setup rather than a software setup.
software can work very well but in the end it is you who build up a "sound picture",if you want to think more professional.
record your session and listen to it,refine.
i've seen a couple of live acts were the mixing guy or the act itself did the eq'ing on the pa console to make the sound fit but at the end this isn't that appealing on the long run (imo).
a good sound will take probably years of experience in any case,but i think you can/will be much faster with hardware units.
latency compensation inside a daw works like this.
if there are plugins which introduce latency the daw's plugin delay compensation (pdc) is then added to your asio latency.
so you need to choose the right plugins.
maybe you need a mixer for your soundcard input,otherwise it's possible that it'll sound crap.
but i don't know the motu.
pci(e) soundcards usually have the lowest latency.
switch on asio in ableton and play with the buffer size,i find a buffer of 256 is the limit for playing through a computer,anything higher isn't comfortable.
then you need to balance your cpu/session because if you're using to much high quality plugins it can start crackling using a lower buffer.
i guess you only can sync traktor and ableton via midi (with midi yoke or loopbe)
i don't think that's a good idea because it isn't very tight.
anyway to play traktor and ableton together with a low latency and the asio driver you need a multiclient soundcard,don't know if motu can do this.

i don't think i'm rambling,i just want to point out that the sound should be good in the first place.
a pa engineer should only fine tune the sound in the location.we are not talking about miking a drum set,do we?.
but then there often is a crappy sound (peaking,scratchy high-mids) on smaller locations,
what ever.
