Im a bit outdated with the new types of synthesis techniques, i know pretty much how to FM and subtract, but i think those type of basses are more on the additive side, aint it ?

any ideas ? tutorials ? thanx !

Here's a good tutorial by Andrew Aversa (Zircon) that might help:

Actually Skrillex uses FM8 a lot for his basses

They're mostly done with NI Massive using many of it's formant-ish filters and oscillators for the robotic/vocally quality. There are about 2000 tutorials on Youtube on how to do it, and also about the same amount of preset banks for NI Massive which could help you to dissect the patches.

The nasty bit is that it's relatively hard to emulate some of the more characteristic sounds without using NI Massive (which may not be the cheapest plugin around, but is still reasonably priced at $199), but there are some filters like Frohmage and OhmyGOD (another OHM freebie) and the old Tobybear formant stuff that can help you with those sounds if you're on the skint/cheap side of the fence.

Given that you're ok with FM its essentially LFO or envelope modulating a filter that's being fed with harmonically rich source (FM is handy for this, and it's another potential target for modulation) and then distort this and preferably take it to a bitcrusher (bit-reduction and esp. samplerate reduction can help augment the "vocality" of these "vocalic" synth patches).

Now another thing in Massive is it's performance envelope which can be emulated by some smart automation in the host.
Obviously a computer still can’t throw a television out of a hotel window or get drunk and be sick on the carpet, so there is little danger of them replacing drummers for some while yet. -- Nick Mason

bkallmer did a cool tutorial: for Zebra you might find useful.

You can do quite a lot of these sounds with Zebra I think. Comb/Formant filters are a big part of the equation that you're most likely missing IMO. And sample rate redux can give you that "silver" to the sounds.. Add lots and lots of modulation via MSEG controlled (tempo-sync'd?) LFOs and you should be golden.

Except, as I said, all the people trying to make Skrillex patches using Massive don't seem to realise that ironically he has gone on record as saying his favourite weapon for making his best basses is FM8 (in an interview somewhere on the NI site)

ah here it is:
