No. A few dollars, quid, euro or yen do not stop you from buying a new synth, nor is there any reason to believe those savings would be passed to you if presets were omitted. But even if they were both true, you'd still have people demoing the preset version of the synth and then buying the one without presets. So, even though they don't get paid for it, programmers are helping to boost sales but only getting paid for the synths that actually sell with their presets. This reduction of price you're talking about isn't some fair-game cost reduction, you're just pushing that cost onto the programmers who now make even less money than before. And all so you... don't have to look at presets?

I don't understand the preset hate. Working from scratch every time is fine if you have knobs to tweak, but when you're moving a mouse it's just a PITA. I went through a phase where I deleted all of my synth presets and worked from scratch. It helped me build my synth patching chops. It also taught me that I suck compared to the pros and should be spending my time making music instead.

Would I buy a synth with no presets? Yes if the discount was large enough. But what's to keep someone from buying the full presets version and then sharing the banks and patches with someone who paid for the discounted version?

Really? Im amazed to see your logic at work.
You must be easily amazed. You know people would do it. It's a legitimate point. Would I do it? No. Roll your eyes somewhere else.......

I never use the back seat of my car, but others do. Cars without a back seat
often cost more, so its a bad comparison to your concept.

Didn't U-he release TyrellN6 and Bazille with just a few patches?
Now there are quite a few. The Synths were not released commercially,
maybe Bazille will be for sale someday.

True that.
It's different if your someone just using synths, from being someone that makes synth presets for distribution. If you were one selling or even freely distributing your presets for others to use, and suggested the OP.
That would be well....f'ing stupid, to put it lightly.

Is it rob_lee you're pissed with? Cause you keep pointing the finger at him without actually calling him out... or that's how I'm reading it anyhow.

I dont think the amount of money paid to preset designers really makes a big dent in the overall product.

I've made presets for a handful of products for a few VST dev's and I can't imagine the money I received to even be a drop in the bucket once you spread that out over the amount of VST's sold.

multiply that by 10 preset designers, and you have about 10 drops in the bucket... chump change.

I would honestly pay more for a synth which didn't have presets bundled into the DLL, in the same way that I would pay more for clothes in a shopping center if the roaming sales floor people would leave me alone. It would be nice to have an FXB bank for demo purposes but in all likelihood I would delete that after going through it once. Whats worse is when the default preset isn't an init patch. The only thing I can think of that is more offputting than baked in presets is wood panels and screws. I would definitely pay extra to get a version without the fake screws and wood panels or empty rack mount screw holes or in the worst case scenario those big metal handles.

I only pulled out 'should', because whether asked
or stated, its still someone elses freedom you are discussing. What's the point? If it were a good idea,
Native Instruments would have done it by 2009. U-he by 2006.

More people understand cars than softsynths, and I never said the comparison I made was yours.

How about damaged grilleclothe on an ampsim gui? Love at first sight? :hihi:

the difference between doing presets everytime by yourself and using presets

this one is somewhat uncanny but does show what efficiency means.

Now guess what time stressed producers prefer?

Exactly what i said. I dont think a company could sell a synth with no presets cheaper than with.

Maybe a dev could correct me, tho i doubt they want to reveal finances in public

Some get lucky and made a great preset once, even with cool fx :-o

Samplers are diff, i would happily buy Kontakt without the huge library for a reduced price.
