I suspect now that it is saving aupresets but just trying to give them the wrong format name - so annoying though that we could end up having two different sets of banks for the same plugin emerging but no ability to use both in the same version. This is why formats like u-he's h2p or NI's former ksd are so much saner - make once, load everywhere.
Woaaa, gruesome! So for now I will only announce my set for Mac users then, as I can't know if I will finally be able to convert them to vst-format somehow, that totally sucks!
Do you have a way to get hold of Studio One or Cubase for a while? It seems easy enough (just tedious) to convert from vstpreset to aupreset in Logic, just not the other way.
I have the demo of Studio One installed, time has run out though. Maybe I should just buy a licence tomorrow - but I thought you said that even in Studio One the preset saving doesn't work as it should or did I get you wrong?
It doesn't using the AU but you can use the VST3 to save vstpresets fine - I'd already made some of my own patches in the non Pro version. They do load in the au version in Logic and can be converted to aupresets from there. What I'm not sure about is what happens for VST2 on Windows.

Ahh, I see clearer now - just checked the price for Studio One Producer, +200 Euros - not the money I would want to shell out right now only to make some vst3-presets - arrgggg, I have to sleep over this.

Isn't there a cheaper version of Cubase?

Post

Why not use Reaper? It's just 60 euros and works OK with VST and AU. I used that to create .aupreset versions of patches I created in Windows as FXP and FXB.

Cubase Elements is only $99 USD. Not sure about Euros.

This is nice that Steinberg released this also for non Cubase users.
A interesting thing with Retrologue and Padshop is of course VST3 note expression. This gives some note based control for parameters but needs of course a host which is supporting this (Afaik only Cubase has this time 100% VST3 note expression support).

I made some time ago a video about Retrologue with Note Expression and how to use it for easy stuff like filter and panorama control.
Maybe it gives some idea..

Reaper doesn't support VST3 - there is no VST2 for Mac

Ignore my suggestion. Reaper doesn't support VST3, and Steinberg didn't release a VST 2 version of the plug-ins for the Mac.
 My bad. Amused got me first. :(

Anyway I've already saved nearly the whole original factory bank now as aupresets. Just got the pads to do - biggy so that's for when I have time over the weekend.

Anyone know if the VST2 saves patches properly and in which format?

Post

Actually, scenario is much worse on my side. I tried it with Reaper, Studio One Pro, Logic and Digital Performer. I can load both Padshop Pro and Retrologue, but I cannot load any preset. I am in Lion 10.7.4. Anyone?

Uses VST3 (.vstpreset). Tried, and it works OK.

In Studio One, Logic and Reaper I can load the vstpresets normally via the built in preset manager at the bottom. In all hosts they take a few seconds to load though. I can also save these presets as aupresets in Logic and reload them in Logic from the side pane, this also works in Studio One but for some reason is not working in Reaper on Mac. I can't save vstpresets from any of these hosts though unless I use the VST3 in S1.

Clearly they have released this in an unfinished form.

I can't load anything using the built in preset manager, but I can load them using the Import Preset feature in the sample windows. I also managed to create a preset and saving it perfectly as a .vstpreset using the "Export Preset With Sample", then load other presets, and then, using the Import Preset, loading again. This was in Reaper, using the AU version. Strange...

Wow! ...this has the potential to produce Omnispheric quality in the right hands......who knows maybe in time the ability to import your own samples in this little inexpensive device will be the straw that breaks the camel's back and lead to a decision in which Spectrasonics opens up Omnisphere? You can only compete by offering more presets as long as you can produce stellar presets before additional features that empower users to do their own thing are needed to take some burden off the software company.
