Do yourself a favor and read (ilok is required):
I tried this plug-in on drum sounds and synths. It is amazing how you can change the sound character with this. This is completely different from EQing.
You can also make the audio sound a little bit "voice-ish" in case of percussion and a bit more for synths (nice on bass). Of course you can tweak it live and automate. Very cool.
It's Antares Throat Evo and is currently available for 29$.
If you have an ilok, I strongly recommend you try it. For me this plug turned out to be very valuable.
