Yep. Approving any RE which interfaces with the system directly in any way would go against the future proofing idea. I can't see them doing this, would open a can of worms particularly under OS X, which changes frequently.headquest wrote:I can't imagine PH approving of something from a third party that adds crucial functionality to the core programme itself, which MIDI out would. This is more the sort of stuff they will presumably want to be working on themselves, and selling everyone in a future paid-for upgrade. Unless they are completely missing the curve and haven't made any progress on MIDI out themselves, which would be bizarre.

Just thought this video of it might be of interest for those who can't access the Props User forum.
To demo he is using a virtual midi cable to route midi back in to Reason to show it working.

You are completely right that this has to be maintained to be able to work with future OS versions. But in order to make this possible this will be a community project.Richard_Synapse wrote:Yep. The RE itself opens on every system. Even if the helper application is not present. It only won't send out any midi data.

Although I'm a big fan of Reason, I'm starting to agree with the people who provide criticism of Props in regard to their marketing.
If you go to the RE shop at http://shop.propellerheads.se/ you'll now be met with a huge banner that spell it out loud for you: "ESSENTIAL INSTRUMENTS FOR YOUR REASON RACK".
Clicking on that link will expose four (4) RE instruments. And these four RE's ("iconic sounds revisited") will just cost you €226.
The cost is not what bugs me here, but rather that they're telling me what's ESSENTIAL for my Reason rack. WTF!? That kind of attitude is, in a nutshell, essentially what many of my longterm Reason friends are objecting to. Who is the target customer for the Props these days? A rich spoiled kid with a fried brain who can't think for himself?
It's very sad if Props have turned into one of those paper tiger companies, who just live off their past efforts. I would have respected them more if they had launched RE as a minor addition to the Reason platform, more like "oh, by the way, we also added a way for 3rd party companies to provide new Reason rack citizens". Instead, it seems they preferred to market RE as if it was something revolutionary for the entire music production industry. That kind of attitude shows disrespect for the VST world and just blows up a bubble about RE, which will definitely burst if not more developers will start developing for the Reason rack.
Here is what Props write at their dedicated RE page:
"The Rack Extension technology has been met with great enthusiasm from the developer community and the list of committed developers is growing by the day. Below is a small sample of companies that are already selling or are planning sell Rack Extensions in the Propellerhead Shop:"
That so called "small sample" seems to be pretty much all the existing developers, actually. So where are all the other developers that are not in that "small sample"? Are they lurking around the corner? Will we see many more RE coming out in the future?
What about the "great enthusiasm from the developer community"? Props have suggested in their marketing of RE's that it's a piece of cake to take an existing VST's DSP code and transform it into the RE format. If that's true, it would make it even more likely that we'll see a shower of new RE's coming out. But how soon? Or is this claim just a BS marketing move made out of thin air? I certainly hope not.

I think Chris Randall of Audio Damage summed it up already:MotorMind wrote:I'm sorry if this has been brought up before, but couldn't somebody simply make a Rack Extension that loads VST(i)s? Some smart fellow might even be able to make an extension that sends MIDI to external devices.
Look at it this way: Rack Extensions are highly-educated Swedes with a good job, a nice family, and nationalized health care. VSTs live in a trailer park in Alabama, watch NASCAR, and are married to their 1st cousin. While both are arguably human, in very real terms they simply can't understand one another, and it isn't likely they'd ever be friends.

Sweden is a really odd country. They have an extremely large portion of attractive blondes, for a start. But it's also true that they have a special business atmosphere, that's reflected in the so called "Swedish" prices.

This is true. High quality does tend to cost a bit more.decalogue wrote:But it's also true that they have a special business atmosphere, that's reflected in the so called "Swedish" prices.

That is one of the most stupid things that I have ever read. VST = plugin = RE. The only difference is that Props has set some gui limitations, which shuts the door on a lot of plugins, and their feature sets, that can fit in the Reason rack. And who is Props looking at for third party plugin development? VST developers. So it seems that the 'Swedes' are the simplest of the 'trailer park in Alabama' plugins with a makeover, less features, and trumped up prices. I'm still expecting to see the new line of Apple plugins show up in Reason...iTape, iRoom, iQ.....ha ha.EnochLight wrote:I think Chris Randall of Audio Damage summed it up already:MotorMind wrote:I'm sorry if this has been brought up before, but couldn't somebody simply make a Rack Extension that loads VST(i)s? Well, truth be told - I'd trust the opinion of a developer who has immersed himself in both VST and Rack Extension development over anything else. Chris Randall does fit that description, so....sellyoursoul wrote:That is one of the most stupid things that I have ever read. VST = plugin = RE. Maybe you can get him to come in this thread and explain why RE plugins do less at the same prices of VST plugins, while being limited to a single host. Maybe he can explain how that is revolutionizing digital audio plugins.EnochLight wrote:Well, truth be told - I'd trust the opinion of a developer who has immersed himself in both VST and Rack Extension development over anything else.
