audio outputs from MUX-as-VST effect

I am trying out MUX as a VST effect in one of my favorite hosts, Orion (windows 7 64-bit). Using MUX adds powerful ways to use MIDI and other modulation signals; I am really liking it!
I believe Orion can only use VST effects with two audio inputs and one or two audio outputs. It seems that MUX-as-VST has two 2-channel inputs and four 2-channel outputs. Is that right?
Is is possible for me to specify the number of input and output channels from MUX when I have instantiated it as a VST effect? In order to use it in Orion, I think I need a 2-channel in, 2-channel out MUX.
Thanks!

Demoing Mux and wondering about more or less the same thing or just about any way if making it work with Orion, also on 64-bit Windows 7 and I'm running the 32-bit edition of Orion. The error message says "Cannot connect this effect! Probably because you're trying to insert an effect with more than 2 channels (e.g. Surround effect) into a stereo channel.".Lee Ray wrote:I am trying out MUX as a VST effect in one of my favorite hosts, Orion (windows 7 64-bit). Why not set the Orion track ("channel"?) to have the same number of ins/outs as the MUX, or is that not possible? The above error implies Orion can do stuff other than a single stereo pair.

Can't find a way of doing it, and absolutely no hits for "Surround" in Orions help section.pljones wrote:Why not set the Orion track ("channel"?) to have the same number of ins/outs as the MUX, or is that not possible? The above error implies Orion can do stuff other than a single stereo pair.

I don't think there is any provision in Orion (either 32bit or 64bit) for setting the number of ins and outs for a given instrument. As for the "surround" message, I think Orion is just trying to point out the error of our ways.
By the way, I used to use energyXT for this task inside 32bit Orion - that is not an option for 64bit Orion.
I still hope MUX will work out since it seems really useful as a VST effect. As a VST instrument, MUX works fine. Create a new MUX instrument and Orion simply adds four 2-channel outputs from the MUX instrument to the Orion mixer.
I had hoped that editing the Audio Output in MUX as a an effect would do something, but double-clicking the Audio Output box just produces the message, "Nothing to edit"

If using it as an instrument works, can't you just put whatever you were planning on having outside the MUX inside the MUX? Or were you going to be using it as a send?
(Getting VSTs to alter their defined pins isn't easy: look at something like Kontakt - they need multiple versions of the DLL to support multiple pin outs. I guess that's what Jo would have to do in this case.)

"If using it as an instrument works, can't you just put whatever you were planning on having outside the MUX inside the MUX?"
The short answer is no. Currently MUX does not work as an effect at all in Orion. I would like to have a MUX effect I can use anywhere Orion will let me have an effect such as a send, as you mention.
The longer answer?
Orion uses a virtual mixer as its interface for routing audio. Adding an instrument adds new audio channels to the mixer. These audio channels are usually 2-channel though some of Orion's own instruments (not VST) are 1-channel.
In Orion, an effect can be
- insert on an instrument audio channel
- insert on the buss out (2-channel)
- insert on the master out (2-channel) or
- send on Orion's 2-channel effects busses (there are four of these.)
So for MUX to work as a VST effect in Orion, it would have to work as a 2-in, 2-out plugin.
Maybe just two versions of the MUX-as-VST effect plug would be sufficient: a 2-channel out and a multi-channel out?
