For many the "Jazz Guitar 1" is the "holy grail" of guitarish sounds for synth.
It cannot be done even close on FM8 - there is no high end in the result. I have heard (not sure) that FM8 has an aliasing-reducing function of some sort which results in the different sound.

Yes, for me too! Beside FM-Pianos some of the Guitar presets
was the stand out tones. I liked most of the Strato type.
One of my old friend even made a one man guitar show on Dx!
I'v learned from him how to use the somehow thin sounding
guitar patches.
I did not try any emulation, but i made 2 different stratos in a
youtube video demo1 (in my sig)

Cranking the master section, digital quality slider up, does that solve the problem?Gonga wrote:For many the "Jazz Guitar 1" is the "holy grail" of guitarish sounds for synth.

..besides that, yes FM8 has a high-quality button placed inside a menu.

All Zebra oscillators have key-tracking. And you don't really need to change breakpoint positions (change the level instead)hakey wrote:ModMappers?hollo wrote:Also the key tracking (free Break Point is missing)

Does somone have an idea what kind of slope the DX7 envelopes have?
I guess that would be kind of important to nail the sounds.
I'm just triying to come up with an DX7 template for Zebra, so I want to get the envelopes right
Cheers

Unless I'm missing something, I don't think it's that simple - eg, where scaling on either side of a break point is exponential.Howard wrote:All Zebra oscillators have key-tracking. I'm also trying to get the FMOs and the OSCs (with a simple sine from spectroblend mode) to trigger at the same phase.
Funnily enough the phase isn't quite right when the phase knob is set to 50, the right setting seems to be somewhere around 51.2 or something.
I'm probably way too nerdy about such details again but I'm bored and need some stupid shit to waste some time
Cheers

It's great to see you doing this though. I would love to see a template like this and see just how close folks can get to the original sounds...Bronto Scorpio wrote: I'm probably way too nerdy about such details again but I'm bored and need some stupid shit to waste some time![]()

Ahh, thanks! I guess I'll simply have to try that!hakey wrote:If the diagrams in the manual are to be believed, they're linear.Bronto Scorpio wrote:Does somone have an idea what kind of slope the DX7 envelopes have?
Yeah, I spend the whole day working on my Zebra bank and some Diva stuff and this stuff is my vacation from itrockin1 wrote:It's great to see you doing this though. The phase thing doesn't work by the way!
I just got it almost right (Phase of the OSC to 51.19 and the volume of the OSC to 98.99). They cancel each other almost perfectly when you invert the OSC. However, this only works on c3, no idea what's going on here.
Edit: Minor details like this aren't that important anyway. Just listen to some of Howards DX pianos from the factory lib, they are awesome and don't care about this stuff (I think).
This was more like a "Let's see if I can do it" thing.
Cheers

Go Dennis! Don't think you're wasting your time - you have contributed a LOT to your fellow community of musicians
No, the settings in FM8 don't solve the problem. In my experience, the way to approximate the DX sound is to use heavy high shelf boost. Here's my FM8 guitar patch with the EQ shelf built in:
http://danling.com/studio/patches/fm8/D ... uitar.nfm8
People who have heard this patch tell me it nails Hammer's DX guitar sound, which it doesn't, but it's good 'nuf for the masses I 'spose
One thing FM8 can do is bend only the low note of a 2-note chord - so you can do "open strings" ala Jean Luc Ponty, Jimi Hendrix, or Jan Hammer (Jan does this actually on Junkie XL's tune "Made for Each Other" around 1:30:

Here's a scan of the manual.
Here's a ratio to cents calculator.
Linear or not, working out how to translate the various levels and rates into Zebra will take a bit of head scratching.
