SE add-on modules?

hi,
i decided it was time to soup up my SE installation and
add a load of free 3rd party *.sem/*.sep mmodules to my
modules folder. in fact, i've ended up adding just about
everything i could find across all my download folders.
(and thought this could be perilous, so i have put them
all in a subfolder called 'addon modules', with subfolders
either per category or per dev, so that i can remove them
easily if there is a problem.)

i had a few (predictable, i already had a few installed)
doubles, which i had to remove, but i now have it booting
up without 'doubles' messages, and reasonably quickly(eg:
it hasn't slowed SE down as far as i can see)

(little lie: i still have EVM SE Osc showing up as installed
twice, but it has been doing that for ages, even though i
removed it completely- i put i back in, and had the message
twice for that module...???)

the current problem is that so far quite a few of these
modules are no-shows. i even added some quite recent ones
last night, and they don't show either.

so:
1/ any reason why this might be?

2/ can i/we get some appraisals/bug reports/etc of modules here?
- i am referring to the FREE ones -
it could save a lot of time, and some may be better than others
for the same job, obsolete etc etc.
(including any recommendations for managing add-on modules)

You might have too many modules? Windows menu's seem to limit you to a few hundred modules. ( I think 300, but can't remember).

Post

i don't think i have THAT many! :)

i've added all the stuff i found via the usergroup,
and stuff from Synthedit gathering, the KDL, DH...
mmm, maybe it does add up...i'll have a little count.

Jeff, any idea why i can't delete EVM Oscillator? it
won't go, and reports as double installed. just curious,
really; i figure it'll be fixed when i re-install.

Post

Try removing all your EVM modules the adding them back one by one.

You probably have 2 EVM modules installed that have the same module name. The module name is what Synthedit uses and it's stored within the file, it's not the same thing as the filename. You could have files named "EVM Oscillator X" and "EVM Oscillator Y" but if the module names are the same, Synthedit will see them as duplicates.

As for the rest of your questions, which version of Synthedit are you using?

:?

I have over a thousand modules installed and they all show just fine. Hell, Chris Kerry alone produces over 500 modules!

Is there a specific scenario where there's a 300 limit? I remember years ago writing to you when we hit an earlier limit but I thought that was all sorted?

Depends on your version of Windows I think. Older version like XP are more restricted as to the maximum number of item on a menu.

Wow, there are so many modules, hundreds or even thousands?

I was thinking of getting SE myself and building a synth, but it seems a bit chaotic and daunting, though, I would not know where to start. I don't have the time to test all those modules just to find out which ones are crap and which ones are top-notch. Are there any top 10 rankings per category so that one does not waste time on outdated crap?
Most SE synths seem to sound mediocre at best, frankly, unless one knows how to code in C++, which unfortunately I don't. Great-sounding synths all seem to have their own proprietary filters etc., even if the synths were partly done in SE. So I wonder if it would even be worth the effort if at the end I would come up with just another mediocre synth anyway, of which there are hundreds out there already :P

@chuck: am using old SE 1.01 er... 6, in fact, have 017 kicking
around somewhere, but..figured it can't be hugely different, for
now. and the OS is Vista. need to start using 1.1
i think i removed any free EVM module i had whe the prob
appeared, unless freefrom arpeggiator got the same name as the oscillator
when he made it..i'll have a check - in any case, re-install coming up
soon, so that should fix it. encouraging to know all your modules load ok.

question: what does it mean if a 'reload' button appears on a module within
a project? (does it mean i shouldn't have those modules? maybe these are
things i grabbed from the JackDark collected/used modules folder - which i
did browse the other day, looking for more stuff.)

can report that i've found RJ voxno very useful for diagnosing polyphony issue,
and his RJsleeper has helped cut back CPU. (old hat to you, new to me :) )

The reload button- go into preferences, general tab, then uncheck auto-reload SDK modules, then you can go into the schematic and press reload button and it'll disappear.

the reload modules option is for module devs
it enables you to test your module, recompile it, and reload it (so the changes take effect) without closing SE down
simply SE copies all modules and loads the copies, so you can overwrite the original files, then "reload" simply copies from the original file again and re-loads the module
It doesn't matter how it sounds..
..as long as it has BASS and it's LOUD!

i would suggest to stay focused on whatever you're doing, like pick one oscillatr module and use it instead of collecting all the oscillators first. if you go at it the other way and try to collect all the sem modules straight off you're going to waste your valuable curiosity wading. when you look for solutions to something you're working on you ought to be able to find a few references to solutions or get a fresh response on how other people do it.

absolutely agree, hence this thread. just having a bit of
an 'exploratory' at the moment to see what some of these
things are. only looked at a few so far, tbh. you suss out
pretty quickly if something will be useful or not, and so
i'm learning to look at the cpu gauge etc.
just wondered if any have 'known issues', that i should avoid,
really. i'm looking at folder full of all downloads i could
find, that i did some time ago, plus anything that has popped
up since. thanks for infos on the reload thing.

Post

i'm sure a good percentage of mine have "foibles," things that i posted when they were fresh that have since been improved. and like just about every developer, there's little chance of me going back to maintain the entire stable, eg. i usually continue to offer older modules for compatability even though "some are cack like" instead of removing them.

i don't think any bugs are egregious, but there's a lot of gray between "doesn't work" and "works.." eg. even adding the simple functionality of loop points on a wav player, there are many ways to do the logistics, none of them are the right way.. so even something like that that seems like it ought to be predefined by logic ends up requiring creative choice.

gonna get round to checking out some of those older
ones soon(in the folder already). looks like you have entire
plugins-in-a-module (tract, pling(?) etc.)
BUT your new ones look like they deserve a look-at first.
note: there's a nice feature in Orion sampler called grooveslicer.
very much like Recycle: you can autodetect split points, or define
set 16th/8th note chops(via bpm?), and this assigns sequential MIDI
note#s (it can then export a proprietary sample bank called an *.osp).

i mention this just in passing, since 'granular' is being mentioned..
so, at the other extreme:
something that could loop/reverse, with variable split points,
pitching, etc. ???

Post

the new modules are sort of a pop-in.. i was coding wav headers elsewhere and decided to open source it as sems. i'm definately not about to start competing in the sampler market. so when i talk about granular et c. i mean like "someone else can develop it easier now with this foundation" :)
