Do you need Aftertouch?

MIDI aftertouch appears to be on the decline. Most of my presets to date make use of aftertouch... but maybe I should rethink?

Aftertouch is a very important expressive tool imo!

My keyboard doesn't have it
It's a yamaha p-80 so it doubles as a piano for me ...... heh, it doesn't even have mod/pitch wheel
Next keyboard, even if a minikeyboard to complement, will definitely have aftertouch!
Once i have it i'll see how useful it is
It SOUNDS useful but i wonder how controllable it will feel.
For the poll, i will vote yes, but i rarely/never use presets as i like to make my own so if this poll is preset related, then i guess it could be counted as a no.

Never understood what aftertouch is, can someone explain, or post a link to the explanation? Thanks!

Do I absolutely need Aftertouch? No I can live without it but do I Like AT? Yes most definitely. I find it most useful when playing lead lines. I think the problem is a lot of the less expensive midi controllers don't have AT so some people never get to experience what a useful expression tool it can be.
I'd say it doesn't hurt to program AT in certain patches even though some people will never use it in performance. Having said that however I usually only program AT in lead patches myself although AT to Filter Cutoff is pretty common as well......

Running short on time at the moment but the quick answer is AT is the amount of pressure you put on a key after it reaches the bottom of it's travel.manducator wrote:Never understood what aftertouch is, can someone explain, or post a link to the explanation? Thanks!

Just changed controllers precisely because I finally wanted aftertouch. Going through all my presets now and adjusting them...

Aftertouch yes.
Even if your keyboard has no aftertouch, you can still assign a midi knob/slider or use automation to access it.

Neither would I. Many of the modern keyboards dont have them, and i assume thats y howard says they r on the decline.RexXx wrote:I would never buy a keyboard without aftertouch.
I think its because many people who now play keyboards arent keyboardist personally.
I use it all the time and it is very important for me.

I love AT and use it all the time. It will never be on the decline as long as there are keyboards out there which have it. Keep at it, Howie!
