Hey,
I've recently started using the free notation editor Musink to put together sheet music/MIDI files for school. Musink plays its music through 3rd-party MIDI devices, and window's built in MIDI is a bit gross.
Can anyone recommend me a free soundfont or MIDI software that plays orchestral strings (like double-bass/violin etc) nicely?

Maybe a quick search on the forum/plug-ins would have answered it to you, but anyway, i would recommend this.

Other choices worth considering if (like me) you're not ready to pull the trigger on a commercal library are Cadenza and DXS Super strings (or some such name); as always, Google is your friend.
Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra is large and free and many people love it, but its parts always sound kinda thin and synthetic to my ears when soloed. Maybe it's because it was assembled (albeit with great artistry and sensitivity) from the low-bitrate MP3s from the Philharmonia orchestra. Still, it's well worth a try.

Wait... loot _then_ burn? D'oh!

+1 for Sonatina soundfont.
I know that many users hate it, but you can try also a couple of DSK plugins. They are based on soundfonts and they sound good ( to be free ) in my opinion. I think you could be interested in DSK Strings, DSK Brass and DSK Virtuoso.
I don't post the link, because of some "dark areas" about the legality of this instruments, but just google it.

Where? What? Link?Shaanny wrote:You can enjoy 1.5 gigabytes of the best free orchestral soundfonts available. This pack includes almost half of my personal favorites, and has added many more. This is, hands-down, the best sound you will get out of your DAW without buying professional samples.
