Hi Guys,

Finally I managed to finish my retro track before the deadline. Sorry, no time for a cover art this time.

http://soundcloud.com/adagiocm/adagiocm-retrock-jam

Host: Reaper x64 on Win 7
Retrologue instances: 26
VST plugins used:
Modern Deep Purple (Simple parametric EQ, but I had to use this just because of the name :) )
Amplitube 3 Free (Amp and cabinet simulation only)
Camel Crusher
X-cita
ReaEQ
Ambiance
FreeG
ReaComp
Edit: forgot to include: Freeverb STRev for master reverb

DR: 10

All sounds are either designed from scratch, or modified significantly from the factory presets. As I had mentioned in my post with the preview, my goal was to come close to the classic rock/blues sounds. Let me know what you think.

Note: I changed the section starting at 1:00 substantially. Please give it another listen.

Enjoy!

please don't think i'm singling you out, and i'm sure you are within the rules, but the screenshot above gives a good idea about what i think is really 'off' about this whole competition

firstly, this is more of a 'one-synth + all the effects you can throw at it' challenge

secondly, the effects used are particular to the software you are using..by extension, everyone else has different options...there is just no level playing field and it just kinda distorts what i understood to be the original focus of the challenge

ideally i'd recommend that there be nothing other than what is included in the synth...if there are to be any fx allowed then i'd suggest they be all free, cross-platform and not tired to a daw...1 reverb , one delay and one compressor....however, these only to be allowed if there are no onboard options...for example, in the case of the 'diva' challenge, only a compressor would be indicated...maybe ad's 'roughrider'

i'd add to the small %age of folk that advocate a 1-person, 1-entry system

i doubt my voice carries much weight as i have only submitted to one challenge, but this is what i think

There's a vote up now in the general discussion thread that includes limitations on number of entries per contestant so you should let your voice be heard over there if you haven't already.

V'ger already held a vote on the use of effects and an overwhelming majority voted to use them. I was one of the three who voted for no plugs, I assume you were as well. Here's the page with the voting results in case you missed it:

Songs zip is here.

About effect plugin usage, I can see the point of your argument El-bo, but as already pointed out, most people want to use them more or less freely. There used to be a time when effects already in the synth meant the external versions were disallowed, but attendance went down as did song quality to be honest during that time.

One can always mark down songs during voting that you think have overused or wrongly used external effects which of course can be very effective, so worst cases might anyway not gain from it at all.

What do you guys think about addressing El-bo's other point, the one about DAW effects which are not accessible to everyone? Should we hold a vote on whether we allow only freely available VST plugins?

Post

It used to be 3rd party effects only (apart from host EQ), but was changed to both host and 3rd party after a vote. Even some modulation was allowed, so the general consensus is for less restrictions when it comes to effects.

But we'll run a full rules poll at the end of the year addressing every point so let's see if there's a change then.

I searched KVR, but it seems there is not a single thread on Retrologue except for this ancient OSC thread, so be it...

Anyway, I was playing around with the demo version - again - and noticed quite some strong noise introduced by any of the two effects. Is that deliberate? It seems to happen mostly when the two oscillators' fine detune controls are set to zero and one plays chords. Deliberate or not, I don't like it at all. First I thought that maybe I had some distortion control on or too much volume, but that was not the case...

Uploaded an audio to illustrate, just a very primitive sound to make it more obvious. Listen to it on headphones:

I hear the noise in my phone without headphones. I will test it when I be at home. Can you describe how to reproduce the noise exactly?
Using: Cubase Pro 15, Bitwig 5, Tascam US-4x4HR, MODX6, DM12D, LaunchKey 49, Yamaha guitar(Pacifica 612v) and bass (BB234) and some virtual instruments and synths.

You sure you weren't clipping in your host? Sounds a bit like it tbh.
