I think the differences between sawtooth oscillators over different brands and even implimentations are only noticable in a broad sense over a whole performance, rather than on a small scale. I suspect a 4-bar morph between a Roland and a Moog square wave with one other instrument playing would just sound static, because the differences are subtle and need lots of exposition to even begin to be noticed.
It's a bit like the difference between a 2 and 3 pole filter. Sure there are differences, but in a mix, it's too subtle a thing to be the basis of a noticable morph.

I loaded most (all?) of my va's before and played them one by one with a saw and open filter .......... it all sounded very much the same. However, if you play with filter and resonance you can hear why they are different from each other.

But are the differences musically relevant enough to motivate such a convoluted feature? Or is this just an esoteric discussion about the Pope's beard?Crackbaby wrote:I loaded most (all?) of my va's before and played them one by one with a saw and open filter .......... it all sounded very much the same. If it were easy, anybody could do it!

Pope's beard
If i've learned anything from these threads on this topic, it's that the oscillators themselves are fairly irrelevant in the equation. Naturally what waveforms they produce and how many of them and how they are, if, modulate each other makes the difference in sound from that section.
I've tried running several synths through The Drop and they all sound good. ACE stood out as a bass monster where Diversion, as expected got the growl and presence (depending on how you set up the oscillators .. the options are unlimited or even more

Just listen to the CS-80 videos to hear this...goldenanalog wrote: One thing about any music instrument: The Devil is in the details. The greater the depth and accuracy of the model (within limits, of course) the more convincing and arguably more musically useful the output.

True!! As well as the high quality of its keyboard to provide the aftertouch.auricle wrote:I agree. It's the polyphonic aftertouch that makes the CS80 such a special and expressive instrument.Crackbaby wrote:I see why'd you want aftertouch
But it's difficult to gather its magic inside a VST.
Until now the best emulation I know, is this one.

ive been on the fence about to fall off and buy diva for use with a yamaha wx5 windsynth.
one thing that would really excite me is an emulation of the oberheim xpander.
but for now ill add my vote that diva sounds amazing, really amazing.

I'd prefer a complete stand-alone emulation of the CS-80 with DIVA technology implemented over just the components inside DIVA. I think you need to recreate all the parts of the CS-80 to make that sound justice.
For DIVA, it would be more sensible with just the components from the smaller CS synths, such as the CS-10/CS-15
I'd love to see the Oberheim SEM components in DIVA as well (i.e. at least the VCO's and VCF, possibly the envelopes).

Oberheim matrix 12 would get my vote. I also like my obxa. The sound has this instability about it. Like it could fall apart at any moment. It is a bit 'interesting' to work with however. I'm not crazy about vintage hardware, just vintage sound. I'd happily have the sound in software. At the moment I have the obxa, xpander, prophet 08, andromeda, dsi tempest and matrix 6. If u-he did release an oberheim-ish module I'd get rid of the obxa, matrix 6 and the xpander (providing it had a matrix 12 model) pretty sharpish. Well, maybe the xpander would stay I don't know. I really like it. It would probably be redundant however if the update included a matrix 12 model. Andromeda has a filter modelled after the SEM though and I'm happy with that. I think it comes close enough to that sound.

I envy you so much right now .............
This idea has been attacking my head recently ..... wouldn't it be a grand idea to have ONE real analog hardware to play with in front of the tv? I can play the guitar in the sofa but for synths i need my computer ..... minibrute is probably the best one for it ..... but how long will it take before i want a sequencer and another analog ... and a drummachine ....... oh yeah, this is why i fought off the idea

most of all I'd love to see a built-in Arpeggiator in DIVA
