haha, spectrasonics really did p*ss on everyone's parade....i mean 400 presets is a great number of sounds to be getting on with, especially if they are all killa no filla...but it all just kinda pales in comparison to what omnisphere might get even just on a routing update...for free :)

Dont worry, we're investing heavily on new content

Starting with 100 new factory presets from Rob Lee (which will increase our number of factory presets to 600, and we have around 1000 additional commercial presets)

Followed by our acoustic instruments sample library, which is factory content as well:

We'll also add "direct disk streaming" hopefuly in a couple of months!

+100

It will take you months to explore all the 'stock' content there ;)

Also, Absynth comes with lots of great patches (although they are not necessarily usable in every music genre :P).

the problem with Omnisphere is that while it comes with a huge library of stunning, gobsmacking, sounding presets, how many of them are actually useable? Many will not fit your style or current project, and (unless they've updated it) it can't load samples. So a lot of cash for powerful synth and huge library which you will only use maybe 20-30% of.

This is also true of the reletively cheaper 'Alchemy' and 'Absynth' which apart from being equally powerful multi-synths also come with loads of presets covering everything,.. BUT, you can add your own samples (Alchemy loads SFZ's as well). Both have cheap Soundbanks specific to different styles (Dubstep, Dance, etc), and there are free banks and patches for both as well. So costs less, you get additional soundbanks that suit your style and have the infinite expandability to load samples.

I chose 'Alchemy' over 'Absynth' because of it's morphing capabilities (didn't even consider Omnisphere after trying it). You can try out Alchemy for free with 'Alchemy Player' (a cut down freebie which can still load SFZ's and samples).

I never use synth presets myself, except as templates for making my own new presets,.. (nothing more disheartening than working on a bangin' choon using presets, then before you get it out there someone else has puts out a track with the same presets - now it looks like you copied someone else's idea and you either have to scrap your choon or come up with your own original sounds - which is what it's all about anyway)

Omnisphere= unbeatable for presets, though I'd like to see them offer a rompler option for sounds, perhaps the marriage between the two, to get regular instruments in there as well. Perhaps I'd sell every other synth off, and just buy Omni back. hmmm, nahhh..

i know right...can't tell you the amount of times i have recorded my acoustic guitar on a choon only to find that someone else has also used an acoustic guitar on their choon...if i were skilled with a chisel and a lathe, i might be able to build myself an instrument that no one else will ave ever seen...only then will my music be worthy

it aint the preset, it's what you do with it

as far as "which is what it's all about anyway"...well that might apply to sound designers but it doen't apply to me....i have nore interest in using tools than making them...of course, one can enjoy both, but i don't...at least not at the moment

i guarantee that you could give me any 10 patches hat you are using and what i would come up with would be a world away from what you would

While I agree with 'it aint the preset, it's what you do with it', you quoted me correctly where I said I don't use SYNTH PRESETS ! Is your acoustic guitar a synth preset ?

If I gave you a million patches, if you don't change/tweak/treat them then they will sound the same.

yes, but i gathered you don't use presets, at least partly, because you think your music is derivative or a copy if someone else has used the same sound

nope, the guitar is not a preset, but the best example (given that i use it) i could find to illustrate how millions of people using the exact same sound can come up with myriad different ways of expressing and composing with it

i suggested 10 patches, it could just as easily be a million...no matter how many, my music would be different and no one would accuse either of us of copying, nor would there me any merit in presenting a case that either were nothing more than the sounds they were made from

if your music is that 1-dimansional that the only way that it can be distinguished apart is by the sounds you have programmed then that might be an area to focus on

LMAO !! - Sounds like it's your thinking that's 1-dimensional,.. you appear to have missed the point completely, or you're deliberately (and rather childishly) trying to troll a pointless off-topic argument,..

As you quoted, I said "I never use synth presets myself, except as templates for making my own new presets" - in other words, I make my own presets. ALL the synth sounds I use I either program from scratch or I modify a preset to make it unique (and markedly different from the original) - is there something wrong with that in your opinion?

To assume therefore, that just because I can program, that my ".. music is that 1-dimansional that the only way that it can be distinguished apart is by the sounds you have programmed" is a really dumb thing to say, ridiculously nieve, and petty - what next ? Are you going to say that my music smells funny on account of I make it differently from yours? Please! It isn't just a stupid thing to say (as it has no foundation - you haven't heard all(/any?) of my music), it's a pointless thing to say as A - no-one cares what your opinion of music you've never heard is, and B - the topic is 'What's the best vst synth for it's presets besides Omnisphere?', not who can bitch pointlessly,..

Some folk come on here to be constructive, some come on here to whine, bitch and be pointless - the fact remains if you don't change/tweak/treat a preset then they will sound the same. Load up a preset and play an A-chord, now get someone else to load the same preset on their system and play an A-chord it will sound the same. If you think you can take a preset and without changing, tweaking, or treating it somehow make it sound completely different then you my friend are a telepathic god of awesome abilities and we should all bow to your amazing abilities, probably, but we won't,..

anyway, whatever, you make your music anyway you like

way to misread/misunderstand what i wrote, and get all kinds of butthurt based on said misunderstandings

while i'm off checking why my secretary didn't pass on the memo that the 'wink' emoticon DOESN'T indicate a cheeky, not to be taken too seriously, comment then maybe you could chill out a little...then if you're really lucky i'll come back and school ya as to what i actually wrote (based on what you actually wrote)

himalaya wrote: As to why Tassman isn't mentioned more...good question. It is still one of the best sounding VA synths, a cool resource of physical modeling and hybrid sounds.
The VA engine needs some improvements, namely, it needs hard sync, a filter that does not distort under certain conditions. The physical modeling would benefit from all the latest AAS designs, like for example, the new modules used in Collision (made for Ableton).
The GUI and some design aspects need an urgent revamp (its patch/preset management in particular) but still, even after all these years, it is a fine, fine instrument.
:!: I hope somebody at AAS sees this.
