Is there really no good soundfont editor?

Having previously rubbished sf2comp, I can now report success, with thanks to mwalters:

I saw your post at KVR-VST mentioning about a soundfont to text program, but you didn't mention the name of the program. I only know of one DOS-based program called "sf2comp" that decompiles and recompiles to SF2. Is that the one that didn't work for you?
Works OK for me. It uses a DLL from Vienna for writing the SF2, so the compiled SF2 is 100% compatible, or as compatible as Vienna is.

Now, last time I tried, sf2comp didn't work but the only thing the above fails on is NS_Kit7, so I'm happy. The GUI didn't work but basically it's just a front end to the command line, not an editor, so it doesn't really add much and is little loss.

Unfortuntely the only sampler I have is Reason. And no conversion software so I can't really go that route.

I know that you think it's pricey but Awave Studio converts from NN-XT to SF2 format, as long as the file isn't imbedded in a Refill. IMO it's an extremely useful audio utility that I think you will find valuable for many other purposes.

I agree on that it's a useful tool, but it didn't convert my NN-XT's instruments correctly. The stereo-samples became mono, the decay times were messed up and the mapping wasn't always correct. It's great if you don't wanna browse your samples once more to re-create the NN-XT form scra´tch in (for examples) Kontakt.

I did this with a piano I assembled from samples in DS404.

The piano sounded fine in DS404.
The sf2 that ame out of Chainer sounds the same except for the release.
When I release a key the sound stops abruptly.
Is there a way to get it to release the same way as the DS404 original?

The simplest and cheapest solution would be to get hold of a sblive card (maybe not even $10 from ebay) and load up the KX Drivers, install vienna.

lengthening the release (labelled 'rel') time on the export dialogue should help i guess (default is 500ms)

But the fact is that NN-XT users are leaved in the desert. It's like in the old days with synthesizers: if you bought a Yamaha synth you had to stick with Yamaha for a couple of years because of industry incompatibilty..

They say that NN-XT will never be a VSTi. I don't understand because I'm sure it could be sold masively.
