Cubase 7 crashes hard

Cubase 7 is running perfectly for me and most likely 95% of everyone else. Hope you unlucky few get it straightened out soon because IMO Cubase 7 is an incredible update. I wasn't expecting much, but have to say that I am VERY impressed so far after a couple of days of learning all the new stuff.

Recently switched from Elements 6 to S1 Producer and I am happy. That is some BS that they release the product before it's ready. They should've just waited.

Not really sure you can compare that to the debacle happening over on the Cubase forums. The vast majority of S1 users seem to be happy with the 2.5 update.

LOL so just to be clear you're not disagreeing its BS that S1 "released a product before its ready", and that "they should have waited"? It sure looks like there are some pretty serious problems on the S1 technical support forum. Quite the "debacle" indeed.

The reason for me to leave Cubase?: I purchased Cubase Artist 6 just one year ago for about 250 euro. Now the update to Cubase Artist7 would cost me 150 euro once again. Let's compare this to comercial standard software in the business domain. If you buy SAP software you will have to pay an annual maintainance fee of 18 percent of the original license fee in order to get maintainance support and release upgrades. Even business companies are complaining about this as beeing a lot of money. But Steinberg wants me to pay 60% of the initial license fee (!) after 1 year in oder to get the release update. That's insane.

The major difference though is that an enterprise software platform often is a multi-million $ investment and accordingly maintenance fees of 18-22% will amount to 6-7 digit figures. Per annum. Can a B2C company that has significant research and services costs, and which does not charge for software maintenance p.a., can such a company survive if they price major upgrades at 18% of original purchase costs? I doubt that.

I would prefer to be charged an annual fee of 18%. And with respect to the question, if a B2C company is able to survive: I think the relation between the one time fees and the annual fees is essential and a company like Steinberg with (I guess) some 10-thousands of Cubase customers should be able to survive very well with a fee of 18%. Look at Reaper: they are billing 60$ for the initial fee and you'll get 2 full majaor releases for free. Seems to work for them although they are producing brilliant quality software.

I suspect that Steinberg are a much smaller company than one focussed on Enterprise level software for business use globally. The scale is completely different. Reaper is a terrible example. Justin is a multi millionaire already from the sale of Winamp. Reaper is no doubt a side hobby for him. I like Reaper, but it's no Cubase. I like version 7 so far. The mixer is a fabulous upgrade alone. The old mixer was functional but not especially modern.

Agreed! Actually, I find this to be one of the least complain-y updates so far, but actually, with C7, I've see more "oh my god, I can't run this on my Mac/Windows version!"-type problems than anything.

Cubase 7 works well for me feels solid, some nice new features, love the new mixer, a very worthy upgrade.

i tried some things tonight with no success. deleted prefs. removed all VST 2.x plugs. removed audio interface. uninstalled and reinstalled using the Core Installer alternate installer. reverted all settings to default. re-routed buses.

i found that i could bring in an audio clip and play it - but, as soon as i load any VSTi, the show is over.. i now have seen about 3 other people with this identical problem..

another positive post from me to level the scales a bit. update from cubase 6.5 to 7 went absolutely smooth for me (windows 7 64bit, cubase 7 64bit). although i didn't have the time to explore the new version in detail yesterday evening, the new mixer and channel strip look great and the overall look of the interface (though a bit dark for my taste) is vastly improved. i'm also looking forward to trying the new chord track but that will have to wait until this evening.

Just to be clear, no. A few bugs are expected with any major update. Cubase for a large % seems unusable. In S1 there are very few problems. There aren't very many posts on the technical support S1 forum. Those are the facts, and you being a Cubase fanboy isn't going to change that.

Funny to hear the folks recommend S1 v2.5 as an alternative...it's good (I have the Professional version), but it has plenty of complaints from users as well. And, nowhere near as mature as Cubase (or Logic / PT). 2.5 was a pretty disappointing release from them IMO - of the most popular feature requests in the forum from what I saw, only bus recording was added (and that took a whole year from when 2.0 was released).

This coming from a (soon to be former) longtime Nuendo user - Studio One is - for me - easily the most intuitive and efficient DAW out there. I haven't encountered any issues thus far across the two main version releases.

I have said it before and will say it again - C7 may now be 7 versions deep and added a crap load of new stuff (a LOT of it is total catchup with other players - including Presonus) - but if none of it works (and it's starting to look that way so far) who cares how mature it is or what it's packing?

I maintain that my two key requirements (crisp workflow and stability) far outweigh maturity, overblown bloated interfaces and endless issues.

Getting the work done is my the primary directive. Not how old it is or how cool it looks.

Can anyone comment on the iLok v. 1 incompatibility? I checked my licenses last night and there's at least one that I can't live without (S. Slate's F-G Compressor). So I bit the bullet and ordered a new iLok 2 (see my post above about upgrading hardware to match software ).

But if I install Cubase 7 before the new iLok arrives, will the mere presence of the iLok 1 muck things up EVEN IF I DON'T USE THOSE PRODUCTS?

Also, as a side note, can anyone point me to a tutorial or other instructional on how to transfer the licenses to the new iLok? iLok.com just has options, but I didn't see any step-by-step on this. I assume just putting them on a new ilok2 will solve the compatibility issues.

Any help here, as always, much appreciated.
